I was hoping to get advice on staples for a semi-competitive Ogre build (1500-2000 points).

I love the sculpts on most all the Ogre models but want to avoid purchasing units that are "unplayable." I learned my lesson by purchasing vast amounts of basic 40k Chaos Marine troops (and spending plenty of time painting them) only to learn that they are largely outclassed by Cult Troops.

With this in mind, the Army lists on site center around approx. 1 unit of Ironguts, 2 of basic Ogres, plenty of Mournfang Cavalry, a toss up of Thundertusk/Stonehorn, and some amount of Leadbelchers.

I particularly like the Skrag, Bragg and Slaughtermaster models. Are they novelties or "competitive?"

Thank you for any assistance!

Bragg is the antithesis of. Competitive. <--did you see that? I can't even put them in the same sentence.

Skrag is cool, but I don't think he's very competitive because regeneration isn't that great and you basically have to take Gorgers. Which themselves are a bit overpriced. He isn't killer bad, but a bit overpriced.

Slaughtermasters are great.

I don't think Thundertusks are all that good. Not even Stonehorns. They are still competitive, but I doubt you'll see them in real competition armies.

Ironguts, Bulls, Mournfangs, Leadbelchers, Ironblasters, Sabertusks, Maneaters, even gnoblar (trappers) are all extremely competitive. In fact not much is really BAD in the ogre book. Special Characters are generally bad in every book.

The general consensus is don't take a tyrant, take a Slaughtermaster and give him armor (or some kind of very good ward save). And a other stuff. And a Bruiser BSB.

Nothing in the book is unplayable. Yehtees are maybe the least useful unit, but if Ehereal spam becomes the fashion with the new VC book, these could turn out to be gold.

I would avoid the thundertusk/stonehorn until you have got to grips with how the army plays on the table.

The units you suggest would be a good start, if you might want to add a couple of single sabretusks.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

Single Sabretusks are pure gold as they allow you to control your opponents charges, meaning you can charge when you want to. And ogres do love a charge.

Mournfangs. Best run in units of 4 with Ironfists, HA, Bellower, and the Dragonhide banner. secondard units just don't have a magic banner. As long as they don't hit models with Str5 attacks or higher they should steamroll just about everything. really good against infantry.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
