I am considering starting a Guard Army, and... Well... Death Korps. Nuff said.
However I am running on a budget and Forgeworld costs heap so I will populate most of my list with expensive tanks (I know, redundant.).
But I am new to Guard. What tanks should I get first (Leman Russ's and Chimera's go without saying)

Imperial Guard - 2000pts Krieg 23rd Panzer Regiment 'The 'Steel Spears'

In my experience, the LRMBT and LR Executioner are the best of the Russ variants. The LRMBT is good against light infinity, MEQ and light to medium tanks, but suffers against heavy armor and heavy infinity. The LR Executioner is a beast against hoards and heavy infantry, but barely threatens even transports.

For artillery, I have been quite pleased with my Manticore. It is not great against MEQ/TEQ, but is great for popping all kinds tanks and most basic infinity. The limited ammo is not a big deal, I have never had it hamper my Manticore in a game.

Chimera are important to keep your infinity alive and provide extra fire power. For any Chimeras that is going to be up close (i.e. carrying veterans with meltaguns) I recommend hull mounted heavy flamers.

I really like the Vanquisher and I'm loathe to lose it when I totally switch to Elysians.

The Vanquisher is a good tank hunter, especially when kitted with a hull mounted las cannon and Multi-melta sponsons.

I run one in most cases, but if I'm fighting other Guard players I bust the second one out and go hunting for Manticores and Vendettas.

Im not very partial to the vanquisher, it isn't versitile in the least, not useful against infantry at all. I prefer standard Lemans, Demolishers, and Executioners

Thanks for the advice guys. From what I have heard the Vanquisher is where I should go to for Anti-Tank, the Executioner for Lightly Armored hordes (Orks and Nids) and the standard variant for armies like Marines and Tau.
Artillery wise, is a Basilisk worth it? The limited range makes it unappealing... but the maximum range and sheer firepower... Its hard to turn down.

The Executioner has essentially a super plasma cannon, so turn it on power and terminator armored enemies as well and laugh manically

The bassie's long minimum range means that if you field it for indirect fire purposes, field two and place them on opposite sides of the table to cover each others blind spots.
