Subject: Necron list......suggestions wanted

Death-Dealing Ultramarine Devastator
|
OK so like everyone else out there i have been caught up in the necron wave, and have decided to start my own army but am having some trouble figuring out how to make it work. I have come up with a plethora of lists but just can’t seem to get one to stick. I don’t have any vehicles yet other than my trusty monolith (that I won in a tournament with my ultramarines army), so I am trying to make it work with infantry at least until i can afford to maybe buy some vehicles and until games workshop comes out with the rest of the models (I really want to run the doom scythe and night scythe, and tomb blades......why must GW torture me so). Well anyhow enough background and complaining on my part here is the list I am most fond of any suggestions would be much appreciated.
2000 points
HQ-Necron Overlord with staff of light, mindshackle scarabs, sempiternal weave, tachyon arrow, ressureection orb, phase shifter: 225 points
HQ-Destroyer Lord with warscythe, sempiternal weave, mindshackle scarabs, tachyon arrow, ressurecction orb: 220 points
TR-20 Necron Warriors: 260 points
TR-20 Necron Warriors: 260 points
TR-5 Immortals with gausse: 85 points
ET-5 Triarch Praetorians with rod of covenant: 200 points
ET-5 Deathmarks: 95 points
FA-10 Canoptek Scarabs: 150 points
FA-5 Destroyers, 2 upgraded to heavy destroyer: 240 points
HS-Monolith: 200 points
HS-Canoptek Spyder:50 points
Total points used 1985
Ok so there is not much in the way of strategy I know my destroyer lord will be running with the Praetorians to give them a better reanimation protocols and to protect him a bit. I am not sure if i will put the lord with a 20 man squad of warriors or the immortals. Of course the spyder will never be far from the scarabs and the destroyers will be my flanking force/ tank hunters. Well and the monolith.......not really sure where that will end up, probably in the center of the board.

Man...no
Like waht is the plan?Your Lords are too expensive---consider using special characters-the Traveller-has about everithing except invul and 2+/res
Also you don't have Catacomb barges.
You warrios are on foot...mmn no
No crypteks---there are a lot of combos there;Or you could have some combos with crypteks and C'tan Shards-or just the shards alone...I don see a plan here....a lot of everything-surely not tournament enviorment

I agree with the Lords being too expensive, personally I would take out the tachyon arrow, phase shifter and the sempiterial weave off both Lords to free up points for other units.
And Crypteks are really good as they have plenty of options to fit into many lists.
In addition I would remove the Triarch Praetorians and add a squad of wraiths with whip coils to run with the destroyer lord.
I've never heard of Triarch Praetorians being used in games so I'm not sure how good they are but just from looking at stat lines the wraiths are stronger, have 2 more attacks, 2 more wounds and a 3+ Invulnerable save. Plus with whip coils they'll make anything in base contact initiative 1 so you get to strike first.
I know you said your strategy but did you have a particular theme or combo for the army to gear towards, such as getting into assault or shooting?

as far as theme not really, kind of new to necrons. but the real strategy i guess is to put the warriors and the monolith in the center as sort of a spear head and use the spyder and scarabs to flank one side and then use the destroyers to flank the other side and hold the praetorians and necron destroyer lord in reserve and use them were needed, i am kind of seeing them as being my hand to hand guys. The deathmarks and immortals are kind of fillers meaning they will go where i need them.

Well... My biggest problem with the list is that... It doesn't stick. You're lacking theme. A theme helps the army getting stronger, and helps you liking it more (Because you know what your army is awesome at, and you like your army being awesome). And by theme I don't necessarily mean "CC or Shooty?", but it can be something as a Tesla-spam army or the Silver Tide... or the AV13 spam, or as I'm doing it, footcrons.
I don't have much problems with expensive characters, I can find an Overlord at those points valid. Although not as competetetive, he's the General of your army, and you want him to be an badass. But I'd suggest you slim down at least one of the two HQs.
And, when building a list, if it's going to be THE list, that list which you're going to be basing your army around, the list defining your army of Necrons... Then you shouldn't care whether or not GW has released models for the units you want to use yet. So if this list is the core list of your army - include those Scythes and Blades.
However, if this list is for meeting up with friends next friday... Nevermind this point of my post.
Another thing... Why aren't you using the Royal Court? It's open to you, and it gives a great boon really. And it helps with my point one - theme. If you want to run an army with a feeling of horror to it, a pair or two of Harbingers of Despair will really help to that feel.
(come to think of it - horrorcrons sounds kind of cool. 3x10 Deathmarks, all with Despair'bingers, Wraiths, a creeped up C'tan, a Despair'binger with Veil of Darkness joined to Lychguards... A doomsday ark... Just stay away from Flayed Ones.)
ANYWAYS, hope my ramblings weren't too incoherent. I'm really tired... But I hope it helped a little bit.

There doesn't seem to be much of a theme going for this army, so maybe that's where part of the trouble is, as Jaguar mentioned.
Instead of blinging your overlord and destroyer lord to no end, try to think of the purpose they will serve. For me, I would put that overlord with one of the warrior units and give him a res orb and phaeron upgrade. This will make the warriors tougher and able to fire while moving.
What about the immortals? Don't just add them in just because. Either increase the size to 10, or don't include them at all. While you're at it, you might want to consider giving them tesla if they're going to be anti-infantry.
And, as usa_supersonic mentioned, crypteks. Use at least one. they have plenty of crazy options that you could use for any necron army.

really like the horrorcrons idea i just might explore this idea thanks. Automatically Appended Next Post: ok thanks for all the suggestions, so I was thinking what if i shaved off the phase shifter, the sempiternal weave, and the mindshackle scarabs from the over lord. I also take the tachyon arrow off the destroyer lord . Take the immortals and deathmarks completely out of the mix. After doing that make the praetorians a full ten man squad ( i am sorry i know alot of people say wraiths are better and they are i looked, but i love the praetorian fluff...wait is this a them forming). Also add a Cryptek with the harbringer of the storm with all the upgrades that go with it. That would leave me with 45 points left over to either bring one wraith with a whip coil or upgrade one more destroyer to a heavy destroyer not sure what to do at this point. Yeah I think the theme for this list though would have to be based around the Praetorian fluff and them makeing sure that the necrons adhered to the old laws and treat worthy enemies with honor.

So, your army fluff is a Tombworld visited by Praetorians and brought back into the Necrontyrian empire once more? I like it.
However, I wouldn't recommend putting a Harbinger with Praetorians... They'll lose their good movement. Not even sure they can join Praetorians.. But nice to see an idea forming.

so ran a list to day based kind of what I had discussed with a few changes dropped a few things and added a doom scythe still focusing on my Praetoreans and ran them against dark angels death wings and really wiped the floor with them. Granted the guy I was playing against tried to out shoot me and that just didnt work well at all. Just so everyone knows Doom Scythe's are AWESOME. Also a sub theme i am running with my army is the undying horde so i will almost always run groups of 20 warriars, yeah i have to foot slog but with reanimation protocalls poosted by resurection orbs they seem to work really well didnt loose a single one the whole game all of them ended up getting back up.

You don't have enough equipment on your overlord, add a tesseract labyrinth, phylactery and a warscythe while you're at it. He should definitely cost more then a landraider not almost as much. That's it tho, besides that your list is perfect. Look out Nova.
