Ok well there have been rumors of templars being updated in early 6th edition. I think templars are a great choice for an army as they are very strong in different situations because of the vows you can take. Painting them is probably the easiest thing in all of warhammer
40k to do too

.
What you NEED to start off with for an
HQ is the Emperor's Champion. He is mandatory after 750 points. If you want a great vow choose Accept any challenge no matter the odds. Giving everyone in your army preferred enemy in
CC. It is invaluable for
CC templars. It is only a 50 points upgrade too!
For troops buy tactical squads and give them
CCWs and bolt pistols for the
cc build. Short on Chainswords? Buy their upgrade kits for cool bits and weapons you need to build a crusader squad(tactical squad). My crusader squads are usually 10 man and I give them a powerfist or powersword and have either a meltagun or plasma gun and I put them in a rhino. That comes roughly around 235 points for all that.
For elites I usually have terminator squad with 3
LCs and 2
TH/
SS and I give them furious charge and I give them a
LRC as a Dedicated transported. That I think comes to 480 points for the squad, furious charge, and the
LRC.
Fast attack: Avoid assualt marines, go for land speeders with
MMs. I like them if I want to fill in 65 points somewhere. Very useful.
Heavy Support: Either vindicators with power of the machine spirit to do devastating short ranged firepower or go with my favorite, Predators with autocannon turret and lascannons sponsons for around 125 points.
Get Emperor's champion first, then 2 crusader squads and 2 rhinos to start and get a land raider crusader, 1 close combat terminator squad, 2 land speeders and 1 predator. After all that I just listed will be a 1500 point list!
Hope you play Templars! Great solid army. Hope my advice can help you! Merry Christmas
