It's personal preference. They are both very different, and in my case, you need to play them both to decide.
Total War is more of a global domination/strategic battle game, and DoW is more of the standard RTS.
It's you call.

Considering they're both two completely different games focussing on two completely different genres, how is anyone expected to make a fair comparison?
You can't compare an RTS to an RTT/TBS.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Neither, they're just different. Though DoW has only gotten better as its games come out (with DoW2 and retribution being by far the best). I'm not so sure about Total War-- empire and the napoleon one were pretty dismal, but I heard good things about Shogun.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Really? I personally loved empire. I've had lots of fun playing it.

The AI in Empire was notoriously idiotic.

This is coming from a person who grew up on really old RTS's. I got used to it.

The games are from two very different genres and very different settings. Thats like asking us to compare Space Marine to Ratchet and Clank. Yeah they are both in the third person perspective, but one of them is a shooter and the other is a platformer.

If you want opinions, then I like total war more. I like the realistic feel of the whole thing. It's very focused on economies, uprisings, and wars.

I think Total War is the better series. Like DoW, but in the scheme of things DoW is probably less meaningful to me than Rome: Total War.
Comparison is hard tho. Total War is like 4x games meets RTS, while DoW is standard RTS.

If I ahd to compare the two, I'd say DoW2. The actual action in its gameplay is far more fun.

Pretty much sums it up.
Though to be honest, I really don't think these games can be compared, they are on the complete opposite spectrum of the RTS genre.

Agreed. The nation management of Total War is quite fun, and makes up for its somewhat lackluster combat sequences.
