I just recently moved back home to canada and got my brother playing 40k again on the one condition that I start a new army. The idea is i wont have any experience with that army. Hes starting necrons and I picked tyranids. Im thinking of picking up the trygon/mawloc kit for some heavy support. Not sure wich one I should build. here is my list so far below. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. Planing on building a 2000 point for fun list. I started with 2 boxed forces. I still need to pick up one more venomthrope.
HQ
Hive Tyrant wings 2x sything talons 230pts
Elite
Venomthrope 55pts
zoanthrope x3 180pts
troops
Warriors x3 models w/ x2 deathspitters, 1 barbed strangler 110 pts
Warriors x3 models w/ x2 deathspitters, 1 barbed strangler 110 pts
genestealers x15 plus 1 broodlord (16 models) 270pts
hormaguants x16 96pts
hormaguants x16 96pts
termagaunts x16 devourers 160pts
termagaunts x16 devourers 160pts
ripper swarm x9 bases 90pts
1557 points
my plan is to run 2 small forces of 16 termegaunts,16 hormagaunts, worriors and a venomthrope. with the geansteallers, tyrant, zoanthropes and the trygon/mawloc to go were they are needed. Im planing to biuld a mycetic spore and stick the zoanthrope unit in it. Im thinking of giving some units the adrenal glands and toxic sacs but I wanted to get more info first. So you're stuck for another 400pts? Buy Carnifexes and convert them into Tervigons (won't take much, put them so they're using their arms as legs too) and attach them to the Termagaunts. Then you may be able to squeeze in the Doom of Malan'tai in a Mycetic Spore in and he is invaluable, especially against armies with men on the ground

Warriors are generally a bad choice because of the abundance of strength 8+ weaponry that can ID them.
I'm not really a big fan of the Venomthrope, because it takes up our super competitive elite slot.
I'd say get some Hive Guard, perhaps 2x2 to help with Anti-tank.
Mawlocs are really bad. If you want a big beastie in the Heavy slot, the Trygon is your man. It really is far far superior to the Mawloc.
For your Hive Tyrant, I recommend the 2x Brainleech Devourers. Those are just fantastic on a Winged Tyrant. Get him a large Brood of Gargoyles to screen him, and act as a mobile cover save. Just make sure you give the Gargs Ad Glands and Toxin Sacs. Throw on Old Adversary on the HT for some real fun times with him and the Gargs.
Genestealers tend to work much better with Toxin Sacs. The reroll to wound against T4 and below is just fantastic. I'm not a fan of the Broodlord, since you can almost buy 3 Genestealers for his price.
Ripper swarms are just bad, drop them.

I have the warriors from the 2 battle forces i picked up. otherwise i probably wouldnt have them. same for the ripper swarm.
Im a bit hesitant about the doom of malan'tai. Mostly because he takes the D3 wounds before he shoots. kinda like a suiside bomber.
Thanks for the advice on the genestealers. they'll have toxic sacs for sure.
The HT is already build and painted. Im very bad at painting but I have to admit he looks damn good. I do really like your idea but I plan on using him for a bit of tank hunting when possible and the re-roll all miss' was what I was after. I'll make the trygon from the kit.
going to have to look into the hive guards

Also the list above is illegal. You can only have 6 troop choices. You've got 8 in the above list.

Did you Magnetize the Hive Tyrant Arms? That way you can interchange bio-morphs. I have Three Hive Tyrants(One with wings, one on the ground, and One Swarmlord) and and all the one hand bio-morphs are Magnetized. The Twin-link Devourers can do Light Tank hunting, by virtue of So many strength 6 shots, even with the AP -.
Nungunz also pointed out (Dunno how I missed it) that it's also an illegal list. Coincidentally, if you drop the Warrior Broods and the Ripper Swarms, you'll be at Six Troop choices.
Tervigons are an all around fantastic troop choice though. They grant Nearby Termagants counter-attack and if the Tervigon has TS and AD Glands, all Nearby Termagants get them as well. It's also a 6W T6 MC that can hold Objectives!

* I'd stick the warriors in a single unit, even if of only five if you're stuck for models, and stick a Tyranid Prime alongside them (pay for him by dropping one of the troop units: I recommend the termies.) They can now (i) shoot straight when coupled with him and (ii) he can absorb the odd Instant Kill shot that they can't. It also makes the list legal.
* I'd strongly consider making the hormagaunts one big unit, freeing up another slot, that allows you to split the stealers into two units - their outflanking can pen the enemy in, making him play away from the edges, and having two of them makes hitting the correct flanking option more likely if he's pooled over onto one side. And it's kinda fun having more stealers to play with. Toy with that and see how it goes. Never used the Broodlord - I was under the impression you needed a few to reap the real benefits (but I might be talking out of my backside.)
* Venomthrope is cool. Stick him next to the Tyrant the Termies whilst you advance forwards for that cover save and you'll do fine. At the least, he'll take a few shots to independently target and kill.
* I'd be in two minds about leaving the Zoanthropes on foot (on... tendril?) Having them on from the start means more targets for your enemy to choose between shooting. But you could stick them in a Mycetic Spore for otherwise I think you might be hard pressed to get them close to the tanks you want to shoot.
* Without Hive Guard your only anti tank is the Tyrant and the Zoans. I doubt if that'll be enough. Hive Guard are basically the backbone of a successful Nid army. I'd get some lest you have lots of alien footsoldiers ineffectually bashing on the side of tanks.

wow. never realized my list was illegal until you all mentioned it. gotta hit the books again. just picked up a trygon today, hoping to buff up my anti-tank smashing. i guess ill combine the warriors and ditch the rippers. I was only using them because they basically came free. Im going to build a mycetic spore and stick the zoanthropes in it to get them closer like you mentioned.
I didnt magnetize the hive tyrans arms but now im thinking about it. 12 S6 shots just seem too good to pass up now that I have a trygon with 2 pair of sything talons.
Money is a little too tight right now with christmas. my christmas gift money went to the trygon so building a tervigon isnt affordable right now. Something I WILL save for.
I had a question about running the hormagaunts and terms as large blocks of 30 instead of the 2 smaller units of each. is it worth trying? also how is the tyrannofex with rupture cannon? a 48" S10 assault 2 weapon. Worth taking or is it not practical? for 265 ( cannon included) does equal a landraider in cost but is it a good idea? any one try this?
I ussually play IG ,Chaos marines, Ultramaries and grey knights ( Ive been playing GK for 3 years now so I dont like all that "jumped on the band wagon?" stuff ) Nids is something completely new to me. Confuses me a bit lol

I would suggest toxin sacs on the hormogaunts to make them effective

My brother actually said the same thing to me as I read your post lol. Will do. I just really dont want to have to glue all those little toxin sacs on 32 of them lol
