So I have an AppleTV and PS3 and both can stream netflix to your tv. Anyone use netflix like that, on your TV instead of a PC or gadget? does it do HD? or does HD cost more? Is the quality good? it seems like for $8 a month it's a good deal, especially if I could just dump HBO and other pay channels and use that instead. I could prolly drop my DVR too if I could just get whatever shows I want on demand with netflix too.

I just got Apple TV myself as a gift.
Unless I am missing something, it does not seem to do HD.
I have a HD tv and have it connected using HDMI cables, etc., but the pic is definitely not HD...
I am also a techno-illiterate so I haven't ruled out human error just yet...

I used to have Netflix stream to my TV via PS3 before they demanded more money for it Now we just do the rental part, but I dont THINK they streamed in HD from what I can remember.

I get Netflix on my Blu-Ray player, and the only thing I've seen on it was Boondock Saints. (It's a movie from 1999. Not the best quality.) The thing with the Instant Cue is that not all products are available on it. New releases and massive blockbusters from the past year are not on the TV service, and it requires you to (Dum dum dum!) wait for the movie to come in the mail. Mind you, It's get every TV show since man first created television, but not a lot of recent movies.
My verdict? It kicks the gak out of HBO. I think. If I got HBO, or any other movie channel, I would tell you it kicks the gak out of it. But we're to cheap to pay for those channels.

I just went and signed up for the free trial. seems kinda cool so far. I doubt I'd use the DVD service, I mostly want something for watching the occasional movie, but I don't feel like it's worth it for me to keep paying for HBO & Starz when I never watch them (other than Game of Thrones).. I figure the few shows I might want to watch I could always get through iTunes.
How much did it used to be? $8 a month doesn't seem that bad to me.

I'm in the same HBOat! One nice thing is all the "On demand" HBO stuff. Doesn't make it worth the price completely, but it makes it hurt less!

It was always $8 - but it was $10 for both streaming and discs. It's now one or the other for $8 a month, and if you want both it's $16 (with various pricing options for more discs at once).
Honestly, I find it to be a great deal. Even with a slightly more limited choice, there's still literally hundreds upon hundreds of things to watch. With the instant streaming, you can pick a show and watch through to the end in a few sittings, without waiting for discs. Plus, no trying to figure out when the show is on what channel at what time...it's all available on demand, right when you want to watch it.
My only problem is indecision. I can never decide what I want to watch.

Oh.. yeah, when I was signing up I thought it was kinda lame that I had to pay extra if I wanted to rent DVDs, but then I doubt I'd ever rent any DVDs anyway.. I'd just do an iTunes rental on my apple TV instead and not have to worry about ever removing the Skyrim disc from my PS3

Not sure if it is HD, but it is pretty awesome. I stream Netflix through my PS3 for the main entertainment center and a Roku box in the master and they both are awesome.
If you haven't watched every movie under the sun, then the movie selection will keep you busy for quite some time. The real benefit of Watch Instantly, as mentioned above, is TV shows though. It really helps you get to shows that would tie up a large number of discs in a normal queue.
For $8, it is well worth it.

Some shows/movies do stream in HD if your network can support it with the required bandwidth. Sometimes you may start a movie in HD, network conditions change and NetFlix lowers the stream quality to allow your network to continue streaming. It does work the other way too, if network quality improves NetFlix will improve the stream quality to HD...

I love streaming Netflix to the tv. I use my Wii to do it, and that's pretty much all I use the Wii for anymore. As said above it doesn't have all the NEW movies, but it has a crap-ton of tv shows. I mean like a ridiculous amount. Also a ton of documentaries, so I'm usually watching either "Family Guy" or "How the Universe Works."
I want to kick myself because I literally have hundreds and hundreds of $$ worth of DVD collections, and now I get them all instantly through Netflix. I have not seen HD on there yet though I'd bet it's coming sooner than later...

You may not be able to get HD through the Wii since the Wii itself is not HD...
Just checked NetFlix FAQ:
Q:Can I watch movies in HD on my Wii console?
A:The Wii console is not capable of playing HD content. With the component connector, the Wii console can play titles with resolution of up to 480p.

I've used Netflix streaming through the following devices:
1) XBox 360
2) PS3
3) Tivo Box
4) TV itself
5) Laptop
6) Droid
I get HD quality on everything but the laptop only if I'm too far from the router, and the phone never gets HD quality
I can't tell if it's 1080 or 720, and the quality indicator doesn't reveal the answer.

I figured out that a lot of stuff is HD, I was afraid it was all standard for bandwidth reasons. But so far on my Apple TV it's all looked good. I think it's 720p, that's what Apple's HD videos are so I'd assume Netflix is the the same. I haven't noticed it switching to other resolutions, but then my router is about 5 feet from my TV.

There is no porn on Netflix streaming.
There is, however, a TON of porn on On Demand, so maybe set up a parental lock on that first.

I regularly cart my laptop out to the TV and stream to it. Better sound, bigger picture, and about a billion more ways to get comfortable than on a computer chair.
Plus, closer to the coffee machine, so when I do something stupid like watching fourteen straight hours of some random show, I don't have to walk as far.
