Since I got some Immortals, an Annihilation Barge, and a Doomsday Ark for Christmas/my birthday (and my friend decided to buy then ditch a Necron battleforce in my basement), I've decided to start up a Necron army.

But something I've come across is perplexing me: the lack of a decent ranged weapon as an upgrade for an overlord. The Tachyon Arrow is expensive (and really, they could have just lowered the S and made it not one use I mean, particle weapons fire Anti-matter, which should technically have zero range, as the AM should explode on contact with the air, yet shooting a sliver of material at FTL speeds is only doable once?), leaving only the Staff of light and a Gauntlet of Flame to fill in the void. Why is there no gauss, tesla, or even a particle weapon upgrade for an Overlord? If I get phaeron in a group of immortals, the Overlord can't do diddly squat until they get into Rapid Fire range, which would make the whole "relentless" thing pointless (pointless in terms of being able to move and still shoot 24"/still assault is the only reason to take a Phaeron). Necrons seem way to into that whole "close combat" thing, which leaves a lot of shooty possibilities out of the equation. Also, I love Crypteks. Not gonna buy the GW models, though.

Lords are there to buff your units and make them marginally better in melee. They will not push the unit over the edge in close combat, though.

The Tachyon is only for Overlords, wich is a whle different slot (HQ).

Lords are going to carry Res Orbs, maybe be Phaerons, and give little bonuses here and there.

Last codex Lords = Overlords. These new guys aren't meant to be as strong.

I was a little wound up by the lack of a decent ranged weapon on the Overlord, realistically the best way to make him "ranged" is either by giving him the phaeron upgrade and thus boosting the moving range of a unit he is with. Or by taking a catacomb barge and having the underslung gun on that as a decent ranged weapon.

It does seem odd though that he had little/no decent ranged capability of his own though, especially given the poor initivative across the army to make the leader only have viable CC weaponry.

Personally I just run Phaeron and Staff of Light and slap the overlord into a beefed up immortal unit like you stated.

Soon his foes would learn that the only thing more dangerous than a savage three hundred pound brute is a savage three hundred pound brute with a plan - Ork Codex
