After building up my techniques on some guardsmen I recently tackled a command squad.

I feel I achieved something with this as other players instantly recognised the command squad from first glace with the detail of painting, unfortunately so did their fire >.>.

I believe now it's time for me to tackle something quite detailed, to take my time on and get looking gooood

For this I've decided to do Yarrick, some nice highlighting opportunities as well as some cloak folds, painting reds and a chance to try non-metalic golds.

So step 1... assembly

Glad to see someone is getting what appears(from this one angle) to get a perfect fincast model. Crisp detail.

Looks like there is a little more clean-up to do on him but im suprised you got one looking so good. i got a hive guard that was missing the top half of his head the other day. I thought it was supposed to be a two piece from how it looked but ended up being a flat "bubble" from the casting. oh well, hope to see more pics of this guy soon. keep em coming.

Games-workshop cleaning kit works wonders, I was 'iffy' about buying it at first but the results stand out.

Plonshart the chap at my local GW assure me if there is ever any fault with a model you're entitled to a full refund so I hope that hive guard ended ok xD

Hate to say the same as everyone else, but that does appear to be an actual FINE Cast! Ready to see some paint!

Commissar Yarricks usually seem to cast perfectly, they seem to have more feeds than other finecast models I've built so require slightly more cleanup but it's worth it.

With Yarrick now fully cleaned and undercoated, I wrote up a painting plan. PRobably will do this for all models I atempt as when I;ve finished paint a bunch and sit back to relax I find... I have forgotten to do boots, or leather straps or something annoying like that.

Here is what I plan to do (In this order):

Face; skin, Bale-eye

Hat; Cap, brim, insignia

Chest; Cuirass, Insignia, Necklace, Sash, Sash Insignia

Cloak & Sword; Cloth, Trim, Coat

Storm Bolter; Casing, Hand, Wreath, Strap, Metal

Power Claw; Casing, Wires, Claw

Face: Dark Flesh, Vermin Brown, Dwarf Flesh, highlight with1:1 Dwarf Flesh Bleached Bone, wash with Ogryn Flesh

Reds: Red Gore, blend to Blood Red, highlight 1:1 mix Blood Red and Blazing Orange, extreme highlight with Blazing Orange

Silvers: Chainmail, wash with Gryphonne Sepia, highlight with Mithril

Necklace: Tin Bitz insignia, wash with Badab Black, highlight Tin Bitz
Boltgun Metal, wash with Badab Black, highlight Boltgun Metal.

Skulls/wings: Chaos Black, Bubonic Brown except for eye sockets/nostrils, 1:1 Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone, highlight with Bleached Bone
Vomit Brown, highlight with Bleached Bone, wash with Gryphonne Sepia to blend

Cloth Gold: Golden Yellow, Wash with Blazing Orange, wash with Ogryn Flesh, highlight with Sunburts Yellow

Metal Gold: Scorched Brown, 1:1 Scorched Brown and Shining Gold, Shining Gold

Claw and Bolter Metal: Boltgun Metal, wash with Badab Black, highlight/blend Chainmail

Casing: 1:1 Chaos Black Regal Blue, highlight with Regal Blue, extreme highlight with 2:1 Regal Blue and Bleached Bone

Coat: Chaos Black, 1:1 Chaos Black and Codex Grey in all but the recessed areas, blend to Codex Grey, blend to 1:1 Codex Grey and Fortress Grey, blend Fortress Grey, extreme highlight with Skull White

Wreaths: Snot Green, Scorpion Green, highlight with 1:1 Scorpion Green and Suburst Yellow

Leather: 1:1:1 mix of scorched brown, Snakebite Leather and Kommando Khaki, highlighted with Kommando Khaki

I don't want something as simple as here

Something more in-depth like the finecast colours displayed on the box

Unfortunately I don't have any daylight time free outside work for a little and all the lights in my house are very dim so I won't be able to start until the new year but at least it gives me planning time

Very slowly getting there xD

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Found I may have waitered down the first few layers of paint too much and it's ppoling making the detail a 'little' harder to paint and make out. Anyone got any tips on how to know when your paints are thinned enough? Is a lot of water needed to get it really thin or just a touch?

Also should have payed closer attention to how I was doing the hat and claw... blood red appears to be a think blended highlight colour than an actual base colour for him... things for next time!

It would appear that they used a metal model as the master for the finecast mold as his cloak has the typical metal pitting that happens on most every metal model.

Interesting that they didn't use the perfectly smooth original model for the master.

Decent progress so far.
