So here's the army my friend wants to play at a local tournment, and he wanted me to ask you what do you think of it (he's to lazy to create himself an account and ask himself), so here's what he's going to run :

HQ:
Lord Kaldor Draigo
(275 pts)

Librarian : +3 powers, 2x Skulls
(175 pts)

TROOP:
7x Paladins : Apoth, MC DH, 2x MC Psycannons, BBanner, Psybolts
(560 pts)

5x Paladins : MC DH, 2x MC Psycannon
(330 pts)

5x Paladins : MC DH, 2x MC Psycannon
(330 pts)

5x Paladins : MC DH, 2x MC Psycannon
(330 pts)

So what do you think of it?

Small squads can be mutilated by lots of saves aka splinter canon, ork boyz etc. Espeacially if theyre walking.

The enemy of my enemy is a bastard so lets kill him too.

Coming from a guy named Draigo...

Lots of Draigowing being played nowadays, tell him to give it a go! Aren't you gonna have issue with armor?

Yes and I have had small squads get shredded by said splinter canons.

if you have 2 squads of 10, both with apothcary,

Mix the weapons a bit, halberts are a must, try get the max psycannons.

See if you have any points left, if there is MC some weapons but still try to keep each paladin with different weapon set up, so you can wound allocate.

NEVER take the apoth upgrade. Its a massive waste as you won't get to use it against the guns that matter and have 2 wounds a model for the guns that don't.

Also, while psycannons are nice, they are not a 'must have max of these'.

Personally, i would not ever field more than 5 paladins per unit... i run 3x5 in my 2k force...

Psycannons are undoubtably the best Gun in the codex for 20 points you get 4 autocannon shots that rend.

Having 8 of them in your army won't hurt, it will only improve on what you have.

Ok, apoth might not be that useful since you have that many wounds in your squad but a upgrade that might be useful is the psybolt, for 20 points your 10 guys get S5 stormbolters, you then can combat squad them and keep the S5.

I run, 2x10 paladin and 1 dreadknight in my 1750 army, (not so competitive as some other lists). combat squad them and you have 4 troops with 32 S7 shots and 24 S5 shots.

I tend to agree that the apothecary is a poor option (except perhaps in a ten man unit, and even then it's pretty marginal, though I have a sneaking suspicion that 6th edition will change how FNP works so as to make him more worthwhile - but I digress...).

Incinerators are a good option for terminators in some cases but as has been said with paladins it's best just to go with psycannon.

Given you can combat squad, there's no need to have multiple small units in your list.

Your Librarian must have a warding stave to help keep him alive in assault as he is really the key to your maximum effectiveness.

Draigo - 275

Librarian - warding stave, Might of Titan, Sanctuary, The Shrouding, Warp Rift - 205

10 paladins - psycannon/banner, psycannon/ mc halberd, psycannon/halberd, psycannon/hammer, stave, hammer, mc halberd, halberd, halberd, sword - 685

10 paladins - psycannon/banner, psycannon/ mc halberd, psycannon/halberd, psycannon/hammer, stave, hammer, mc halberd, halberd, halberd, sword - 685

Paladin - warding stave - 75

Paladin - warding stave - 75

Use Draigo's grand strategy to keep the two single man paladins out as long as possible, deep-striking them to seize/contest objectives and/or to tie up enemy units in assault in the late game. In kill point missions you keep the big squads together, in objective games you might split them into combat squads, depending where the objectives are.

From a personal perspective unless you are vs a noob, an army based on 5man pally squads are dead bye turn 4-5, like the other guys say putting them in 10 man squads will increase there survivability by a lot

Or put 5 man squads in stormravens, but that list plays rather differently to foot paladins.
