I'm looking for a good local co-op ("couch co-op") game to play with my girlfriend while she's visiting over the holiday, and I've narrowed it down to these two games. I've heard that Dungeon Siege III is no good for online play, but decent for local co-op. War in the North is newer, but apparently has game-breaking bugs which potentially ruin your save file. So, has War in the North been patched? And if so, which of these two titles would you recommend?

I haven’t played War in the North yet but I can say Dungeon Siege 3 was somewhat lacklustre. The game has no replay value (or newgame+ mode) and takes a few days to beat. I’d recommend renting the title versus purchasing it.

I don't think War in the North has local co-op, just online.

Check the forums for War in the North. The game has multiple bugs that ruin save files by causing quests to either not appear, or to be impossible to finish. While most of those problems affect the side quests, there are two or three fairly common ones that gum up the main quest progression as well. Snowblind has acknowledged this and is working on a patch, but no patch has arrived as of yet.
War in the North does have local co- op, unless GameStop and every review that I've read for the game was lying to me.
In the end, I think I'm going to dust off my PS2 and fire up Champions of Norrath or Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. They both seem to be leagues ahead of the options available for the current generation of consoles (which is quite sad, actually). When War in the North gets patched, I'll pick it up on sale at some point.

Me and my wife just finished DS3 on 360, and we really enjoyed it. Couch cooped the whole game, however I wouldn't play it online.
DS3 definitely has couch coop, and that is the only way I'd play it probably, heh.
Has some fun boss mechanics here and there (combat mechanics I thought were actually pretty dang well done), a bit too much junk loot, fairly linear story. But overall, I'd say its a solid couch coop game.
