If it's not in the codex you can't use it. With that said I have a feeling that as new codex's get done there is a high chance they will all be getting that vehicle.

I personally bought one for my salamanders just as a display 'it looks neat' model. I doubt C: SM will get the SR but until they do it may be better to wait or understand it may only play in super friendly games. Will rumors of C:SM getting it be true or will SM get a different flyer? No idea but I also didn't care when I bought it.

I see it going the same way the LR Crusader did...

It looks GREAT in green...

Just field your army using the BA codex. Its what I did lets me by all sorts of cool things like Baals and lots of assault marines! Its almost like I have a second army....

Well, it looks no worse in green. It's still not an attractive model.
A GW designer threw it into the ugly tree and it hit every branch on the way down.

Me to.

It is "ugly" in the SAME way that most marine vehicles are and fits perfectly into their range imho...

I actually really like the storm ravens. Heck I got 2 of them now and it's a lot of fun. Only problem I have with them is that they still get blown up a lot and there's no great way to hide so big and tall a model.

Isn't there a WD that says Vanilla Marines can use them as a HS choice?

Nope! I have heard that the powers that be at GW wanted to give it to all but the design team said no!

No. Its rules were printed in WD when it was released, from which some people assumed that they could take it in any Chapter.

The only way to do so rules-wise is to play Apocalypse.

From a personal point of view, I hope they don't allow all chapters to take them. I feel that it takes away from the elite feel of the blood angels when their mastery of flight is suddenly common across the whole space marine spectrum. (I can understand grey knights using them as they are supposed to be the elite of the elite and get all the shiny toys.)

That said though, from a marketing point of view Games Workshop can sell more models if they make it available to all marine codex's and their deeply held desire for profit will probably make them do that.

See also BT and the LR Crusader. It would be nice if they were the only army with an awesome assault variant of the LR, but now every marine army has that and a better version now in the Redeemer.

This ^^^^

You get our LRC we get your thunderpigeon...err stormraven in the codex. That said I don't think they will go elsewhere as when the kit came out I believe it had a GK emblem that strongly hinted that the GK would get it well before the GK book came out. With no blank door I think it will stay a BA and GK thing.

BT uses the Codex Astartes as toilet paper. They’re an Imp Fist successor, recruit from multiple planets, and are known to be the largest Chapter in the galaxy. They’re on a constant Crusade, keeping it real for the Emperor and not bumming around like the other guys. They hate psykers and can’t ally with them. They’re basically an entire chapter of Chaplains. CC lunatics. What every Space Marine should aspire to be, if not trapped in a Matt Ward nightmare.
