Hi everyone,
I heard recently of an army list called Dogs of War that came out some past editions long ago. Apparently, it is an army composed of different races.
Does anybody have any more detailed information in this regard? Is it still usable in the 8th edition?
Cheers,
A

GW eratta'd them out of existance. Besides, the official GW book was pretty much unplayable.
The actual point of the book was as a supplement for other books. It was a mercenary list that everyone could recruit from, that could function as a stand alone book if you wanted too.
But there was some abusive combos that could be made with it, such as covering up an army's weaknesses almost completely.
currently, the only way to use Dogs of War would be to use the fandex and it would only be in friendly games.

Asarnil the Dragonlord IIRC was the only dragon available (an elf on a dragon)
But he costs a boatload and has no wards or other special rules
The pirates were actually a recent creation. They were made more for fun and have no rules. The vampire is a good stand in obviously for a vampire. The human captain is probably good for say an Empire army

Just to say...I'm still playing using Dogs of War. They are fun to play with; but a little costly both in terms of aquiring new minis and the points cost of them.
You can actually play with the dogs of war still, if a army list provides space for 'Dogs of War'. However, this in reality only allows Ogres from the Ogre Kingdom list...
However, they are really fun to play with...for instance, my halflings are supported by a unit of ogres and birdmen. Win about 50% of the time.

That was errata'd from the previous army book, and isn't in the new one.

Mandingo,
I am also a Dogs of War (DOW) player. The extant rule sets for DOW break the army into two parts: (1) Regiments of Renown, which is composed of all the named units (i.e. Birdmen, Giants of Albion, etc.); and (2) Dogs of War, which provide a bunch of 'vanilla' troops types (core: pikes, duelists, light + heavy cav; special: dwarves, elves, ogres, halflings, etc.). If you are curious in finding all of the PDFs that GW no longer supports, you can find all of them here:
dogsofwaronline.com
Also, you'll be able to find the fan-based rulebook at the above link, which is amazingly fun IMO.
If you are thinking about pursuing a DOW army, you should definitely look into some indie (or just non-GW) companies (Warlord or Perry Minis, for example) for your core troopers. Picking up numerous big units of pikes, for instance, isn't really realistic through GW — that is, unless you've got a huge amount of money to throw at the project. And, with that said, the money might be better spent on more (and better looking) plastic humans.
I've been running DOW for a long time (with varied success). So, if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line.
