I want it but I won't be able to get the first wave for certain. Going to have to hope that they don't "curse" this one like Cursed City!

Though I might well hunt and see if I can get any of the Kelpie sprue on their own

Yeah, I want it but 1) I'm totally skint during the Christmas season and 2) They are absolutely crazy on the price. That is approaching a large "get everything" type of Kickstarter from competent developers. Not GW style "Uh, it is ok if you house rules a couple things" that comes in cereal box quality cardboard type game.

Really good game developers games with high quality components and a couple premium add ons and game play expansions can be had for that price.

I'm mostly interested in the nurgle models and chances are I won't be able to get all of them together for cheaper later on, right?
So, having a little dungeon crawler in addition isn't that bad, as I don’t have that kind of game at home yet.

i wonder how much of the price is down to the map book being used (printed outside china?) compared to tiles

although google says inflation has been an eye watering 22.4% between 2021 and now so the 28% price rise between cursed city and darkwater is almost reasonable by GW standards

For me the map book detracts rather than adds to the value. 206€ for that is a definite nope.

Curious to see what will be the excuse this time for some retailers not give discounts since its not limited product.

It might not be a limited product, but if its selling out at full price on the GW website there's no reason for 3rd party retailers to not get more profit and sell at rrp as well. Even if it gets restocked its likely to be a big christmas sale item and might not get restocked till after.

Theres a reason for sure and that is luring people to get to their store by Christmas time. Theres something about retail getting people actually instore during this period.
People will just go to GW instead.

Yeah but if it sells out on the GW store then the 3rd parties can charge full rrp because GW isn't there competing.

We saw it with the Christmas bundles only this last few weeks. The ones that sold slow stayed on discount; the ones that sold like crazy steadily went up or stayed up at rrp or close or just with much reduced discount.

Sure 3rd parties want your custom, but when something is selling out inside of 30mins the supply becomes limited.

Yup, brand (amd brand loyalty) sells and the quality of the game as compared to the competition is pretty irrelevant here.

Client checks prices and sees they are the same, they go to store, theres no product... they will buy something else instead, to make up for the item they could not get... Thats Christmas in a nutshell.

This is the golden period for any retailer and yes independents may want to get all that 20% for themselves... how much will they lose to the GW for that? No one knows, but thats their main sell point... discounts, out of the window.

This is also the period mum and dad buys for kids so they will, for sure, go to official if theres no discounts anywhere.

Yes that's why 3rd parties offer discount, but when the stock runs out at the GW mainbrand store then suddenly you don't need the discount to get customers.

Even if its just over a weekend or two whilst GW gets further stock in

That goes back to my Point... Some independent are not giving discounts on Limited edition boxes... not before... not after.

I wonder if GW stores will get open / demo copies this week? I want to handle the map book before I decide to buy it.

Yes I've seen Element Games charge full RRP for a limited product but I have never seen a (UK) retailer yoyo between 20% off and full RRP depending on GW sales.

Well that price was a real boner-killer. I was working myself into a conviction that I would actually paint all the models and get people to commit to a Gloomhaven: JotL type game.

A few years ago, I would almost certainly have bought this; I think the bad guys should have been more generic, but they are very good sculpts. And I think the map book idea is a good one. I might have gone for it anyway (although I really don't need any more big boxes of GW models in my cupboard), but I really dislike the adventurer sculpts. They all look pants, IMO.

I was on the fence for it, but the price takes me out for how many times I am likely to play it.

I have other models to buy over this.

20% lower RRP and it would have been a definite yes.

Unfortunately, likely there will be enough people who do buy it for it to sell out, leaving the new game next time at a higher price point.

If I were still building an AoS nurgle army I'd buy it for the superior sculpts. Too expensive for just a "nice to have" purchase.

Not cheap for sure, but with the massive amount of coverage on socials and the seasonal timing I think this will be very popular and sell out.

I was looking at the content and comparing with the new incoming Nurgle revamped models and I think the "blight kings" on this set are vastly superior to the new announced ones and fit better with the amazing old ones.

Just thinking that for the same money one could have Blood Bowl: 3rd Season, Underworlds: Embergard and a sandwich meal-deal.

Actually I think, for all of those peeps, going to a GW store to get Darkwater for Christmas only to face a "computer says no stock" that for that sort of money, you could get a load of stuff for underworlds which is probably the closest to a small fantasy game GW sells? Embergard and one of those boxes with 4 extra warbands and still saves you money.

Similar price to say, Tidal Blades 2 and its miniature pack which offers a lot more content and a stronger game system.

Descent Legends of the Dark (Descent 3E, co-op, app driven) is probably the closest comparator for something you can buy in a shop, and that's about half the price, similar number of minis (though not as nice) and a bunch of 3D cardboard terrain.

Base game of Oathsworn is cheaper (albeit without the monster minis, which are extra) at £130.

It's around the same price as the new edition of Gloomhaven, which absolutely dwarfs it in content, although not as many mins.

It's hard to see it having much appeal. The one thing it does have going for it is you can buy it in a shop, whereas most of these content/mini heavy dungeon crawlers these days tend to be crowdfunding/direct purchase only. But it's launching into a retail environment where stores have just got Gloomhaven 2E in, at the same price, with a box about 25 percent of the size.

Legends of the Dark is a *lot* cheaper now than when it released - fairly sure the RRP was £150 in 2021. Of course, as a gameplay experience, anything is better than one of GW's "board games" but if you're a miniature collector and you can get it at a discount it's not exactly crazy. Not for me though, I never finished painting Cursed City and played it once.

Even better, one could turn Embergard into a small home-made WHQ game if they wanted to! So long as one knows the basic rules of a previous WHQ, regular playing cards and D&D dice then its easy to implement. D6s are always plentiful for any player.

The end result is obviously not as meaty as a full Quest game but it is ideal for a quick dungeon bash. It's ideally 2-3 Heroes against 2-4 individual hostile characters with chances of respawning or if the players muck around too much, a large monster might arrive and force them to dash for the exit.

I did this with Direchasm a few years back, but for Embergard...easily bolstered through the AOS Introductionary Set for at least it's 20 "weak bodies" Clannrats, with some kitbashed into more dangerous hostile characters if needed. The Stormcasts, likewise, can be used as alternative heroes.

This is why Dark Water's new style immediately made me smile, despite losing the activation dice pools and being Nurgle of all things( ewwwwwwww! ). Had it been sensibly priced I would have been cheering it on...

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

I've run one campaign of Blackstone Fortress and one of Cursed City with my friends. We had fun with both, but found that those games tended to overstay their welcome, with some repetitive quests and not much meaningful progression for heroes (we would probably have enjoyed them better if they had been 1/3 to 1/2 shorter for a campaign). While the minis are amazing, we preferred Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion or Descent Legends of the Dark for their content.

I'll still get Darkwater (the minis alone make it worthwile in my view), hoping the campaign is more focused this time around.

For our run of Cursed City, in the end we decided to skip the grindy, repetitive 'quests' and just do a boss-rush of the cool pre-designed levels.

Damn I wish the would reprint just the minis from Cursed City and this without the game boards. $250 is too rich for me.
