Subject: [Combat Storm] - an overview

Hey guys!
One of my favorite games of recent has been Combat Storm 2nd edition. It's a game that uses army men on a table to fight battles between the US Army and the People's Coalition Front. It's made by Strategy Wave Studios. They just released the 2nd edition of the rules. The games is comparable to other games of the battalion size games like 40k, Warpath, FoW; but is scaled to more of a platoon size. The grunt rifleman is about 30pts (not trying to infringe on copyright), and an average game is 1500pts. The individual classes only go up in cost to a max of about 50ish pts, and then max of 60ish points for a Special Forces version of a class soldier. There are rules for tanks, and certain soldiers can call in airstrikes or missile strikes. I highly encourage people to pick up the game.

Is that the one that you use actual plastic army men with? I'd play that loads, just to give my hordes of greens and tans some use, but my opponents won't 'sink that low', apparently.

Yep. You actually play with generic green and tan army figures that a lot of us played with growing up. I suggest getting a set of tanks per player just to spice things up a bit and force both side to take some anti-tank stuff so that the game doesn't turn into a giant shooting match with riflemen. That's what happened with 1st edition anyway. After looking through 2nd edition rules, (just got it the other day, haven't had a chance to try it out yet) it seems to be an improved version of the rules and they work better.

I've got so many Plastic army men and old kids toys that I haven't got round to using yet. I'd forgotten about Combat Storm, and was preparing to 'mod' warpath to have a massive floor war.

If you want a "floor war", Combat Storm may not be for you. For a massively fun game for floor wars, I found one prior to finding CS, where each weapon had a range and you would drop a ball of some sort (it gives you specifics) and whoever falls over you remove as dead. Anyways, when you play CS, don't play an all tank army against an infantry army. I found after some playing on Saturday, that lower point games work best, as it basically becomes a skirmish game with small squads. The big thing with skirmish CS is that you're playing on a big table (or floor), thus giving plenty of room to move around.

I gathered that much. I despise rules where you throw a ball or something at your soldiers. Where's the strategy in that?
When I say floor war, I mean a big game played on the floor due to lack of table size. Sorry if that conflicted with the grognard definition.
I can't wrap my head around skirmish with Plastic Army Men, but then again, I thought big battles from an early age, and am only beginning to get my head around Skirmish games. For skirmish, I must say I'm looking at the old GorkaMorka Roolz.. However, CS will be something good to head to if that all goes small birds up.

It seems that the game wants to be a large battalion size game, but it somewhat doesn't seem to work that way. I must say, I've only played one game, so it may be different. I really want the game to be a large game. I personally like big battles, which is what has turned me off from skirmish games, that and most skirmish games allow each model to do 10-20 different things instead of move and shoot/fight. If it does work out to be a skirmish game, it'll be a simple skirmish game. It really works as a floor war, as a lot of the ranges for the guns are X distance +. With that being said, a massive floor war would make sense as compared to a 6x4 turned sideways.

Intentional double-post, but I'm adding something new, so...
I'm talking with one or more of the guys from Strategy Wave Studios (the guys that make CS), and he says that the game tends to attract people that are into the Call of Duty and/or Battlefield franchises.

I used to run massive floor wars, and I'd always used dice(never played with my army men til I was 12 tbh, and that's when I started using dice) but it was simple, 2 guys look at each other then both player's rolled, whoever got highest won, and only Tanks or Bazooka men could harm tanks, Machinegunner's counted the highest roll as how many guys they killed.
I even made(or worked on) my own iteration, for WWII gaming, focusing on large scale battles.
