Hi I am new to fantasy (play 40k) and some friends and I are doing a tale of 4 gamers and I chose high elves, I will be playing against vampire counts ( kinda hard to counter with a new book), bretonnia and lizardmen
I have a basic Idea for a 500 point list as this is the starting points limit.
Hero- Mage with silver wand 110
Core- 15 spearmen with full command 160
Core- 20 archers with Hawk eye 230
Total 500
Would this be a solid start for 500 points and as I am new I don't know much about fantasy so any advice will be great.

Technically a legal list needs 3 units at minimum but you may have an exception with such few points check with your fellow players.
Maybe something like:
Mage-Silver Wand -Ironcurse Icon 110
15 spearmen with full command 160
10 Sword Masters -Musician -Standard -Banner of Eternal Flame 178
Great Eagle 50
498
Sword Masters are cheaper then the archers and a small unit at this level is devastating. Spearmen to bunker the mage. Banner of Sorcery would be nice for the SM, but with only 2 spells you probably won't need that much dice.

I like SMs at this level and in such a small unit. WLs are good in bigger numbers.

Just my two cents but doesn't vc have no range? Might keep the archers to keep them at range.

You doing a tale of four gamers?
Got any High Elves yet?
Tell us what you have got, if you have nothing set yourself a purchase goal and ask for advise entirely based on what you have bought, will buy.
I recommend start with the Battalion. Contents:
1 regiment of Spearmen (20 figures)
1 regiment of Archers (20 figures)
1 High Elf Chariot
1 High Elf Bolt Thrower
Spearelves are golden, build them with full command. You will need to take your archers as two units of ten. Build them a champion model and a musician, however for now I would blue tack a musician arm instead of the champions sword arm, glue it later. For your early games take two units of ten. Thats your three units.
Bolt throwers work well for you, your army is quite shooty for 500pts. Plan your character accordingly.
Leave the chariot for later, you cannot afford it now and it allows you to defer the choice of which chariot to build until later.
Blue tack one of the crew together as your commander.
The other option is to go with Island of Blood, your army is set for you. Mage, swordmasters, sea guard and reavers. You can make 500pts of that easy. Ask for remission from the Core Troop % for now, it will probably be understood.

If thats what you have got, there you are.
Not much else you can do with so little. I would amend your question to ask what boxes to buy next.
You got a copy of Island of Blood yet? Buy that and you will have enough stuff to have enough variety to start asking list making questions.

I'd give your spears the flaming banner as a good anti Nret move (causes fear in cav) should take you to 500 on the nose
