Recently i played a couple of games against a friend using my CSM's against his BA. The first game was with the 4th edition codex and that was no fun at all (turn 3 and most of my army was nearly wiped out) but the next game i used the 3.5 codex. Not only did I have fun with the army again but i also got a draw XD. This has got me to thinking, are there any other persons who feel. fed up with a current codex and would rather use an olderone? I had to do some tweaking to make the 3.5 codex seem up to date with gis blood angel one but it worked perfectly :-) i know there are space marine players that miss chapter traits and guard players missing doctrines aswel so how do you feel about it :-)

I've used the Chaos 3.5 on a multidude of occasions, its just a much more fun codex than our current incarnation.

I miss a lot of the old army traits from before. I don't miss vehicle deathtraps though I would imagine being in an exploding tank would really suck and the results were accurate.

My Armies:
- Death Wing and Green Wing
- Tacticals and Devastators

I still use the Witch Hunters Codex, due to the fact that it is awsome. I let my friend use the 3.5 CSM book it works better for him. I haven't dusted off my marines for a while but I would love the idea of useing the old codex, just with an update to the cyclone missle launcher. The way I see it the most important rule in every eddition has been to have fun, and if using an older codex or even a fan made dex makes you happy go for it as long as you opponent is cool with it.

I miss the fact that orks seem to lose a bit more every codex of what makes them stand out as an army. I miss things liek choppa rule, Mob up rule, doubling init Waaghs, and Burnas given some of these rules were a little too powerful but these were things that made the orks feel like a great army!

Yeah, but now you have a codex that has fewer redundant entries (boyz, skarboyz, ardboyz, AND stikk bommas?) and has some level of competitivenes. The current Ork codex lost a few things but gained so, so much.

If someone wanted to play against me using the old Witch Hunters codex instead of the WD update I'd be 100% okay with it. I miss my old Space Wolves codex but haven't played it since the new one came out.

I greatly prefer using my old Necron codex even if that means I'll probably never win. It has a great monolith and Destroyers that are still jetbikes , the C'tan as they should be, models with initiative higher that 2, Pariahs, and war-scythes that ignore ivul. saves. as far as I'm concerned the only bad things are phase out and high prices

I like to use the 4th Edition Space Marine book for a White Scars list.

Well, the 3.5 CSM codex was one of the best codices in the game, while the current one is one of the worst 'dexes ever.

I'm sure there's people still using the 4th edition Tyranid book. Wouldn't even be hard slotting the Trygon into it.

This. Also, I still use the old Hive Gangers rules from Codex Armageddon for my gangers units.

Chaos Space Marines: Definitely the previous Codex.

Sisters of Battle: No doubt, the previous Codex.

As for Necrons, I wasn't thrilled about the previous Codex but I absolutely loathe the current one, so my Necrons are now back in the tomb.

I miss the carnifex rules, they were my favourite unit.

This is the part I really don't like here.

If you choose to use an older codex, especially in order to make games more competitive, you're entering dangerous territory. What if I wanted to used 2nd Ed rules for my Terminators? I'd just 'tweak' them to give them 2 wounds and a 2+ invulnerable save, to better represent the saves they had in 2nd Ed. Or start taking Vortex grenades on my characters, tweaked to fit the 5th Ed rules? Is that more or less appropriate than what you're doing? And why/why not?

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

I play the 4e Last Chancers with my 5e Imperial Guard army regularly. My friends could care less, because it's fun and the unit (without fail) does something epic/entertaining.

Yeah, no one can stop you doing whatever you want with your friends. It's your game and your models, after all.

But it's the principle of the thing, IMO.

I have a friend with a 13th Coy army from some sub-codex, the Black Crusade one I think, that isn't valid any more, I have no problems with him using the old list because it's the only one that really fits the army any more.

But I'm afraid I wouldn't play against someone using the older version of a current codex, barring exceptional circumstance, because generally I think they're simply trying to gain a competitive edge.

If the rules for the type of army you have are current, then use them. Why wouldn't you want to?

I think the jump between 2nd and 3rd rules is too great to attempt a 5th Ed list with 2nd ed Codex. I tried writing a list from my 1994 Ork Codex for 5th Ed rules, but it just didn't work. I did do it from my 1999 Codex, but mainly because the actual wording of the bonuses and abilities fit the nomenclature of the 5th Ed rules. I didn't tweak any number or rules, I just ignored the ones that were not relative any more. Like being able to use the Waaagh! roll during a Sweeping Advance. Sweeping Advance is clearly and differently defined in 5th Ed, so this special Codex Rule no longer applies. That the Waaagh! doubles the Boyz Initiative on the Charge is a Codex specific rule and does not contradict the 5th Ed Rule Book means I can use it.

I am curious as to what GentlemanGuy did to 'tweak' his Codex.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

I like playing with the 4th edition Imperial Guard Codex. It had so many great options. I miss the doctrines.

Allow me to answer as a Necron player:

no!

When the battle is a bloodbath and my Necrons drop below 25%, and I start smiling. I just can't help it. Because I have less than 25% of my models left, and I'm still playing.
