I am very new to Warhammer fantasy and I am starting with the High Elves. I saw the spearmen and they looked like a solid unit but I was not sure on how many to take and how to set up the ranks. Also if you could tell me what units work and do not work that wold be good.

I favour Plasma Cannons with spearmen, but some people swear by autocannons.
Depends how many Solar Sojourns your opponent is using.

Ever thought 40k would be a lot better with bears?

Make sure to give your spear men shields or... well lasguns still won't hurt them but bolters might. Make sure to get some heavy weapons and tanks to support your spear men or else they'll never make it into close combat with skimmers or battle suits. Oh and look out for Hammernators... and which part of the forum you're posting in

I put in a mod alert. You should be shuffled soon enough.

@Joey & Fire_for_effect: Stop making fun, he's clearly new to the site. I know I had problems navigating.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

General Principles. Elves must win combats due to extra ranks fighting, extra attacks and the ASF special rule. They cannot match most if any armies in rank bonuses. If you can afford four ranks and a standard and musician you are doing well. Unless stated otherwise assume all the below has a full command group.

Spearelves: Take a large unit or two, a absolute minimum of 20 (5x4), increase this if you can to 24 (6x4) or 25 (5x5). I do not recommend units much bigger than that.

Phoenix Guard: Also require a deep unit, these troops can hold a position due to the ward save. I would take no more than 20 (5x4).

White Lions: Another holding unit due to their being stubborn, so you can afford to lose a combat. I would take 18 (6x3) or 21 (7x3), wider to bring S6 axes into play, three ranks means you don't lose attacks after casualties.

Swordmasters: You don't need many, they don't have stubborn or a ward save to hold the line. Instead they get lots os S5 attacks. I would go with two ranks, in fact the ten you get with Island of Blood is enough for now. You can increase that to 15-18 with a second set of same.

Cavalry (any) : Five or six in a single rank only, don't bother with a standard bearer unless you want a magic banner.

Eagles: Get them, unlike most of the army list eagles are cheap.

Tiranoc or Lion chariots: To taste, I use ghem in conjunction with infantry blocks for a high impact. Only do this if you can reduce the opponent enough that it loses steadfast. Tiranoc chariots can do the job they are paid to do, Lion chariots have sustained power Tiranoc chariots lack if the charge fails to do its job.

Shadow Warriors and Lothern Sea Guard: Too overpriced to be of any use, shelve them until the new army book comes out.

Archers: Overpriced but with potential, deploy in two ranks with a musician. If you want a mage caddy unit also take a champion to absorb challenges. Ten or twelve is good enough.

Bolt Throwers: Can be nasty but overpriced, take against cavalry heavy opponents only, and then not against Brets due to their ward save.

Thanks a lot. How do the mages do and what lore should I get.

Lore of Life is my favorite for HE at the moment. Good buffs that increase survivability.

High Magic covers all the bases.

Life and Light are good secondary choices. I always have at least one high Mage first, either level 2 with Seerstaff or level 4.

The one bit of bad news regarding High Magic is that it is too ecclectic, if you don't get lots of spells or the Seerstaff you will not have control.
