So my buddy wants to start playing 40k and really liked the look of the eldar. Whats the best way to go about starting a 1000 point army. Is the battleforce a good buy for him? whats a good starting list? keep in mind he hasn't played 40k since 3rd. Thanks in advanced dakka

Well, what is always a good start is infantry. The battleforce has this. It's also good as it allows some other parts of the game to be played.

So essentially, great for a starter, worse as you become more used to your list and play style.

I found a couple of the battleforces a great start. Add a farseer and a war walker to them and you have:

Farseer
10 dire avengers
20 guardians with 2 platforms
2 wave serpents
3 war walkers

Couple of boxes of aspect warriors to this and its a list that can go mech or foot depending on how your friend would like to have his army build up.
If you'd like any more advice feel free to ask, and check ebay, even older aspect models look great and can pick up metal wraithlord very cheaply now too.

This is exactly what I did and I found it to be a great way to start my army. Just enough troops to have a few options and enough stuff to get you ready to go mech, foot or hybrid. I added two Prisms (sometimes proxied as Falcons) and some Warp Spiders and Striking Scorpions. I might have bought differently in expanding the army, but I stand by the first basic purchases.

I've purchased the battle force, and I think it mostly depends on how you feel about War Walkers. And just a thought, but I used the 5 Dire Avenger bodies to make two boxes of Storm Guardians two full usable squads.

Storm Guardian boxes only come with 8 bodies, when you need ten to run them, how absurd is that?

Like Anime in addition to the fun of 40k?
Then maybe you would like the series created by OoziHobo & Co called QUADGUN

Well, Guardian Defenders are a waste of points and buying. Nevertheless, the battle force has its value since all other models there are playable.

I agree with previous posts, though I started back in rogue trader so I did not need all the guardians, so never bought the box. I personally almost never play guardians. I do however play Storm Guardians as you don't have to buy an weapon platform and you can put them in a serpent, add to flamers and a warlock with destructor and you have 3 flamers. You can take Fusion guns, but don't rely on your guardians taking out vehicles (buy fire dragons), but in an eldar list getting flamers are hard to come by (unless you have wraithlords - which if you go mech you will not have). I think people eaither love storm guardians or hate them. In my hands they have been very useful. I have taken out a whole platoon of IG with Storm guardians with flamers and Destructor Warlock in a serpent. I have even with the help of other squads put the hurt on marines. It works great for regular boyz mobs, IG, Tyranids and even guardian eldar and some Dark Eldar units. Now their CC is a joke unless you give the warlock enhance, but still their are better aspects for this (banshees, Scorps or Harlies). This is my opinion, but I really do like them. I don't field them every game, but I field them a lot more than Guardians. Cheers
