In a Dawn of War scenario, does Mordrak and his Ghost Knights count as one HQ choice that can be deployed on the board?

I don't really see why you would want to deploy him via that instead of using First in the Fray, but Yes.
Mordrak is not an independent character, so him and his unit of Ghost Knights occupy one HQ slot, and thus can be deployed.

That's what I figured, but wanted to be sure. As to the why, I just that being able to deploy 25 Terminators + Mordrak at midfield in DoW could be useful in pinning my opponent back in their deployment zone.

How many slots they occupy is not relevant - a Lord Commisar and his Chimera occupy one slot but cannot be deployed for Dawn of War. However, as Mordrak is not an IC and cannot leave the Ghost Knights they are a single unit and so do fit the DoW restrictions of a single HQ unit (NB - not a single HQ choice/slot)

Good to know. That's one we don't use much in the US, though others (like e.g. for exempli gratia) we do.

Wait. What?
Just read this thread, and am getting conflicting information.
I use Mordrak. I don't assign any Ghost Knights to him (ergo I don't pay any points for them, & have 5 models in reserve to deploy when the d3 wound rolla are made).
Anyway, pg 82 of codex shows Mordrak "Unit Composition: 1 (unique)" & "Unit Type: Infantry (character)" * The exact same as Draigo the entry above & several other HQ/characters in HQ. Look at Crowe entry too before you bring up independant character too.*
Then on page 40, it states "If he (Mordrak) deploys via deepstrike, Mordrak and any unit he accompanies will automatically...." Indicating he can attach himself to another unit that is capable of teleportation.
When I play (in a GW store) Mordrak & the 5 GK termies he attached to deep strike into the game. I allocate a wound or two on Mordrak, & usually get a couple Ghost Knights to appear! Fun stuff.

Mordrak does not have the independent character rule. He cannot join other units (but ICs can join him).

Draigo says he's an Independent Character (page 39). Crowe and Mordrak do not, therefore they are not Independent Characters.
Yes, the army list at the end lists him as a simple Character, and that hasn't been errataed... That's interesting, and the confusion is understandable.
Mordrak cannot attach himself to anything, the "any unit" refers to his ghost knights, or if you attach an IC to him (since he is not a unit that only ever consists of one model).

Is Crowe an indy character?
On pg 42 (his entry) "...all models in that unit (with Crowe) gain the furious charge..."

Actually I think the (character) "key word" (for lack of a better term) is for things that target "characters", ie Deathleapers abities.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

So he's alone - and while you may have 5 "spare" models, you can only ever bring in 3 of them. Reread his rules - you make 1 roll per phase you lose a wound, and have 3 wounds to lose before he dies. Therefore you can only ever bring 3 extras in. WHich is why i dont bother running him solo - 5 knights is much better on the board protecting him.
krazynadechukr wrote:Anyway, pg 82 of codex shows Mordrak "Unit Composition: 1 (unique)" & "Unit Type: Infantry (character)" * The exact same as Draigo the entry above & several other HQ/characters in HQ. Look at Crowe entry too before you bring up independant character too.*
Yes, and? When you buy Ghost Knights they become a unit with him. HE is NEVER an IC, so it is NEVER a retinue, and you NEVER have 2 units deployed as you cannot deploy Ghost Knights in a unit separate from Mordrak. Thus, at DoW, you only have ONE HQ UNIT on the table, with 1 - 6 models in it.
krazynadechukr wrote:Then on page 40, it states "If he (Mordrak) deploys via deepstrike, Mordrak and any unit he accompanies will automatically...." Indicating he can attach himself to another unit that is capable of teleportation.
Wrong. He is not an IC. He can BE joined, he cannot "join" another unit. So, you can attach (just for giggles) a librarian to cast warp rift and sanctuary.

Glad I am changing my list up. Never ever had a problem, or question from another gamer, of how I was using Mordrak.
I read rules. I read rules, black and white, no liberal interp of them.
As far as wounds, for every unsaved wound I rolled a d3, and brought that many ghosts in. The entry even says you can go over the standard number of models in this way...
Heck, I had a battle with Mordrak and he had 3 ghosts with him, I put 2 wounds on him, and ended up getting 5 more ghosts in!
Ahhhhh....Good Times!

I would say that would be an extremely liberal interpretation of the rules, to the point where you're more making things up than interpreting.

Krazy - you are simply making rules up there.
The D3 is how you determine if you bring a model in at all; if you pass the D3 >= remaining wounds roll, you bring ONE model in, and ONE model only
You have absolutely no basis whatsoever to think you can bring D3 models in. Thats simply cheating, plain and simple
