Hi,

So I was thinking about starting a new army for WHFB, and I was hoping that some people could answer my questions:

1) Do Chaos Dwarfs use the Dwarf Army Book?
2) Are they an easy army to learn with?
3) Are they based on shooting and combat?

1) No they use the Warhammer Forge book (Tamurkhan: The Throne of Chaos)
2) Nope, not at all
3) Sure? Every army in the game has to shoot and fight in combat... no army can win solely on magic

I would add that Chaos Dwarfs aren't really a proper Warhammer Fantasy army at present. As chaos0xomega alluded to, there are rules for them in the recent Warhammer Forge book, but fielding them would have to be with the permission of your opponent. Obviously the vast majority of people would be happy to play you, but it's unlikely they'd be allowed at tournaments (if that's your thing).

Counts as armies definitely are permitted, so by all means use the Dwarf book as a basis for a Chaos Dwarf army.

+1 to the above
You could just use the Dwarf army book and use the warhammer forge chaos dwarf models.

That would be one expensive dwarf army

How's this? Use the standard Dwarf army book to make a "counts as" Chaos Dwarf army and the Forgeworld Chaos Dwarf book to make a "real" Chaos Dwarf army. Modify the models yourself to make standard dwarves into tainted dwarves. Season your collection lightly with genuine Forge World products as your budget allows. Use the same models for two armies!

This will only work if you like modding.

A lot.

That said, I don't know about the tourney scene, but I'm sure most players would let you use Forgeworld stuff. I certainly wouldn't object.

My P&M blog - in which I chronicle the transformation of a battered windfall of models into an awesome addition to my Blood Angels force (hopefully) - can be found here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/431820.page.

In the Tamurkhan book it says the CD army list should be considered official so I think people should be willing to accept the rules.

If you listen to podcasts I would check out the recent Garage Hammer podcasts where they go through the CD list (its the part 1 of 2). I would also check out http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/ where they should have more knowledge and ideas for converting as Forgeworld isn't cheap.

1.) Go to www.chaos-dwarfs.com for all your information needs. They are nice folks and even have a Chaos Dwarf fanzine.
2.) Currently they are not really supported. The Tamurkhan book by Warhammer Forge (Forge World Fantasy) is the closest to being official. There is also a fan-made army book legal for US-Indy tournaments. And the WoC book also works surprisingly well with bull-centaurs being Chaos Knights etc. There is an old official list that also was updated by fans.

Thanks for that podcast lead. I've been looking for a new one since The Waaaagh! Cast ended.

FW's Chaos Dwarf list is a bit unhinged - the rules for the Destroyer are positively loony.

Mantic makes some great models that you can use for Chaos Dwarfs, and they tend to be a little cheaper than GW.
