today my local gdub started some month long thing where you get a free zombie model (booyah!) that counts as either a lord/hero in fantasy, or a hq in 40k.

Its base stats are:
ws 1 bs 0 s 2 t 2 i 1 a 1 w 1 ld 2 sv --

however whenever you buy something (surprise surprise) you get 2 points to add to its stats OR give it a special rule. (or make it a psyker)
For example if I bought a finecast model, then i get 2 points. I could then make it a monsterous creature (40k) and give it a 6+ invo. This models are free to use in all games in store this month.

Opinions, is there something similiar in place at your local GW?

Columbus, Oh

Sounds goofy and fun.. and of course RIGHT up GW alley for purchase driven promotions.

If I was you.. once an hour I would buy a pot of paint.

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

The only zombies I've seen in my local GW were the staff (and a large chunk of the clientèle. Emphasis on the chunky).

That said, I try NOT to go into the local GW, not when the local GoodGames is larger and better airconditioned - and closer.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Its happening down in Sydney. It helps when your friends with the manager of your local GW, you get make a whole zombie army!

Is this the same one where they are stopping the "free" use of their paints and glue in store?

[Apparently, too many pots are being "written off" under this exercise.]

Can't say I've heard of that yet. I do know that Hornsby (my local GW) they have removed all of the store brushes because they all go missing.

Sydney City store (Battlebunker) started this new trend.
So now, in order to get painting or assembly help, you have to buy your own stuff and use it.

It's spreading slowly. What was that about the "parasite stores who give nothing back to the community"?

Really?? I live in Sydney, but rarely head to the city store. This seems like a pretty weird idea. Whats your incentive to go to the store now as a customer? Its not like they are competing on price...

Thats been par for the course in BC for atleast 3 years. We used to prime models for people but it was 'too expensive'. Then they stopped the use of store paints because to many where being written off. Then you had to book a appointment to use the tables or the painting station. Prioirity was given to the new kiddies. So if 4 people where painting and a new kid bought AOBR I had to kick someone out of their seat and give it to 'little timmy'. Same with the gaming tables. If it was a open night and someone new came in for a game I had to stop a game in progress and give them the table. GW you get what we say you get....

This reminds me of that card campaign they had out around the time of the DE release. Sort of annoying, but spices it up a little.

Can imagine some FNP, MC, IC, full stats with a 3+ invul unless it has decent restrictions. Just like the times in the card event they'd show up with a deck of them and it'd be like having a 500 point disadvantage, whatever army they have pretty much having an invisible fateweaver.

Many USA stores let you use their paints temporarily IE when you are first starting out. Problem stores were having was even vetern's were just using and abusing their in store paints. Call me old fashioned... if you've been playing the game for years why again do you need to use in store paints? In store paints should be considered a privelege not a right to use. Considering the paints, most consumers would end up ruining in store brushes. Plus with the new washes, all it takes is for one guy to go wash happy, and there goes everything they have on their own trays.

If you've played more then a year, bring your own stuff if you plan to paint. You should likely have it at home anyway if you opt to paint your armies. If your new or need advice on techniques, that's totally different. If you store is nice enough to offer you and your mates free paint to use whenever you want, thank them, and considering re-supplying it at times.

As for the Zombie thing: its like everything else they do to try and drum up sales. I don't head to shops often, but if some guy says "i get a free HQ, and he's WS 10, Str 10 because I guy here every day" i'm going to flat out ask them not to use it, or not play me. Down here we had a tournment where people were given free Chaos Aspiring Champions for any army. It sounded really cool, until we found on their pass their marks to units.

IE Deathwing Terminators with a 2+ invul
IE Nob Bikers who are Toughness 6

That got stupid real fast. Unfortunately, if you were a guy who only plays tournments you had no idea what you be getting into. People catered their armies and had pre arranged strategies because they play pick up games.

I have to agree... if anything, this could be 'softened' by a GW sales opportunity: Buy a bunch of cheap plastic toolboxes and add Aquillas and foam to hold paint, tools, models, and call it the "GW Hobby Kit" They could probably even find something at the craft store to re-brand that is a mini-paint station of sorts.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.
