I first got SC IV because of the amazing character creation, simply to make utterly ridiculous characters and watch them fight. After seeing the (rather cheesy) character creation trailer for the new game it has got me very exited:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAZTv_7yxoA&ob=av3e

All the way through IV i was complaining you couldn't change height or weapon colour but they have massively exceeded what I wanted from the new features. It seems to be very close to a sims 3 style creator.
As far as gameplay goes as much as I can tell there is no huge difference from IV, except for that critical finishes have been replaced by special moves, which are activated when your soul gage is full, similar to other fighter games. Characters are more or less the same, allot seem to be new characters inheriting a previous weapon style from characters in IV. Ezio is this instalments guest character, seeming to fit in far betters than IVs star wars Characters. However the thing that has got me most exited is the possibility of an unarmed weapon profile for character creation in the form of Devil Jin from Tekken (this opens the door for so many custom characters).

What are your opinions/wishes for the new game?
I would also be interested in any of your best custom characters from SC IV (game/TV characters, if you dont have a pic, equipment recipes are fine).

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Its looking good from what I've seen in mag reviews. Like the semi-new character rooster shuffle as well. Added bonus that it seems the girls have been 'deflated' a bit since IV, where it was really getting to DoA silly levels.

Not sure it'll be a launch day purchase, It's probably out a little too close to the ME3 release, but I can see me getting it by the summer for sure.

I'm pretty stoked. SC has always been a fun series, and I imagine this will continue the trend.

However, the voice selection sounded terrible in that lol. Changing the tone made it sound robotic

The more stupid the voice the better IMO (in character creation anyway).

Right behind you. No, really.

I played probably soul calibur 2 or so a lot (at neighbor's house as a younger derp) and it was fun. I haven't played four. Is the seies still very good? Should I get 5?

The series remained true to the originals, and just kept adding more things. If you liked the earlier ones you'll like the newer ones for sure. The only reason I can see someone not liking it is the new soul gauge that's being implemented, but if you don't like a fighting game because it has a super meter, I can't see you liking many fighting games these days.

So yes, I think you'll like 5. However, you should try out 4 to see how things have progressed and changed.

Also, Rafael and Tira are my fav characters, and I'll happily take any of my fellow dakkaites on once the game drops.

I used to be fairly proficient with sophitita, yun seong and kilik but my skills have mainly regressed to button mashing again. I havnt played it seriously since the beginning of last year due to Halo reach, FO:NV DLCs, SPEHSS MAHREEN and Skyrim filling the gap.

I feel I ought to necro this thread rather than make a new one. SCV has been out over a week now, any new opinions? Also im particularly looking for ideas for the character creation.

Story mode is.......Terribe. Cheesy, predictable and very, very Japanese. Ezio dosent change much TBH, he fits in a hell of allot better than Yoda did in SCIV.

Yea, you have to count how many times they say "destiny", "family" and especially "malfested". Most of it is told through story boarding, making it look like they ran out of time/money halfway through. Patrokolos is the most whiny, arrogant protagonist in any game I have ever played. Seen as they made such a big deal out of it I thought they were somehow going to let Ezio make an appearance in the story mode, but again I was disappointed. Luckily you only have to play the story mode once through for all the relevant achievements/unlocks, some of the new stages I am quite impressed with.
But all of this is irrelevant IMO, I bought SCV for the character creation and I have not been let down. The only thing I could complain about this is the "unlocks". On SCIV you had the tower of lost souls to unlock certain equipment, it got gradually harder throughout helping you to progress if you were a beginner (like myself). In SCV you have to reach a certain player level and of course that means getting experience. In my case I discovered the fastest way to get XP is to just play the arcade mode over and over on easy, which gets very boring after a while.

For what it's worth this game sure did have a silent landing. I've heard nothing about it in my circles, or even on the net for that matter. Metacritic doesn't even have a page for it yet.

I'm looking forward to playing this. Do I know it'll be much of the same? Yes. But I'm a huge fan, I just wish Weapon Master mode would return.

I love Soul Calibur, but having played this I was...unimpressed.

The story, as already mentioned, was really bad (not that it was ever good) and is limited to, essentially, 3 characters (though 1 is the focus).

That doesn't really both me, though. What bothers me is that the character balance seems, at first glance, awful. Granted, it might simply be my style of play (I favor lots of speed and motion) but some of the characters are just obnoxiously good, while others are awful. Granted, this has generally been the case, but it seems egregious this time.

For example, Viola is absurdly powerful given her nearly unlimited range, many directional changing abilities, and a set of attacks that are very difficult to block (especially anything involving setting her ball). Raphael is also very good this time around, both because he seems to have gotten a speed boost, and because lateral tracking is better, meaning his primarily linear move set isn't a huge disadvantage like it had been.

Compare this to Z.W.E.I., who is so slow that Raphael can land a combo, and then land a second combo before Z.W.E.I. can block or guard impact (this might actually be an animation problem). Lizardman has similar speed issues, given his range.

Everybody seems to have issues with different characters, who others will find completely fine. I personally have always hated playing against Tira, Voldo, Astaroth and especially lizardman. Nigthmare, Setsuka (Alpha Patrokolos) and Raphael I find an absolute pain if someone can use them right. All the others I seem to be able to deal with OK. I played Sophitia in IV and started with Pyrrah Omega in V but decided this time round I want to play Cervantes (Medium speed, decent damage and I especially love being able to shoot people in the face). Balance is notoriously difficult to do in any game Killik (Xiba) i notice has been somewhat nerfed this time round where as Raphael has deffinatly had a boost.

I've always thought Raphael was pretty strong, in all of his incarnations that I've played.

So, in your opinion is the game worth playing, Dogma?

Raphael as always been my nemesis, he's the only character my buddies ever beat with on a consistant line (about 50-50 against him) Anyone else it's more of a 90-10 thing, for me.

Astaroth rules.

I would rent it first. I bought it, played, and went back to SCIV but I'm also a semi-serious SC player (competitive, played in some tournaments, etc.) and, to be honest, my prime objection is that the characters I'm very good at using (Raphael, Viola, Taki, etc.) are too good (well, not Taki).

And, if you thought Raphael was strong before, you should see him with what seems like ~30% speed increase, and better lateral tracking.

As long as Astaroth still functions I'm happy. And still not buying it.
