I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I searched and didn't find anything that specifically answers my question.

Some friends of mine and I are getting together in a few days, and I thought it might be fun (as we only have one table) to do a few smaller games split on each half of our gaming table. What do you think is the maximum point game that might fit well on a 4'x3' table (maybe 4'x4'... we have some extra room on one side but I'm not sure how much).

I was thinking 750 might work best, but who knows, maybe 1000?

What do you think?

I think 4x4 works up to 1000 points really well. As an aside, I played a 2000 point tournament on a 4x4 square with my Imperial Guard and it was hilarious.

EDIT: A fun idea might be to have everyone bring 1000 points, then after two games of that, split into teams (do one person who won more, one person who lost more or whatever to keep things balanced) and do a 2v2 with the lists you brought!

Back in the day, my FLGS used to be in a store little bigger than a closet. As such, in order to get 4 tables in the space, they couldn't be bigger than 4x4 foot. I only rarely played above a thousand points then, but at that points level a 4x4 table felt just fine. I even used basilisks then and never had to worry too badly about the minimum range thing.

I think you could probably stretch it to 1250 without too much bother, but 1500 might get iffy, just because a horde army is going to have a hard time fitting everything in there (without shenannigans like al'rahem). That said, I played 1500 at that with non-horde armies and there was still enough space. Higher than that, though, and I'd say you really need the extra two feet of width.

If you want to see how 1,000 point games play out on that table size, click here (starting at game 22).

Thanks for the tips! Im happy to hear that it's doable and normal to use a smaller board for ~1000 pnt games. The battle reports are pretty cool, and nicely done.

I'm going to pitch the idea that SRM mentioned, it sounds fun. For time sake (we are pretty slow) we will probably keep the 1v1s smaller so we can fit in the 2v2.

Thanks again
