Hey Dakka,
We came to a pickle last game we played with my IG buddy. My Catacomb Command Barge moved flat-out, hence gained 4+ cover save. Then it got shot and my enemy hit and rolled 14 against my side armor. I than did my cover save and luckily won. And the quarrel we had was "did penetration happened or not?" If the cover save prevents it - I don't think I should loose my Quantum Shielding due to "suffering a penetrating hit". It's against logic that a freaking hole in the hull gets "healed" by the fact vehicle was moving fast. It's more logical that my Barge "dodged" the explosion unharmed.
So what do ya think? Is the Penetrating Hit SAVED by legitimate cover save still removing Quantum Shielding?

From memory (at work with no BRB) the 4+ save says the hit is ignored.
So you roll to hit, pen and then if you save, you ignore the hit all together... thus your QS is still intact
That said, i would still expect an FAQ to confirm this as its not as clear cut as i we would like!

The argument on the flip side is that while you may be ignoring the hit, it still took place.
QS says if you take a penetrating hit you loose it.
You have taken the penetrating hit but are ignoring it...
If you follow this line of reasoning you can see why others might not think you keep it

Well - every effect that happens once unit "Suffers a Wound" (for ex. Entropic Strike) doesn't take place if save was succesful. Some effects don't permit saves. Everything is clear.
Issue is that against vehicles you really rarely get any save, and I haven't seen any anti-vehicle rule mentioning save as vehicle usually doesn't roll saves...
To suffer a penatration (or penetrating hit) is same as suffering a wound (or unsaved wound). Save prevents it. Ergo, any additional effects shouldn't apply...

This has already been a thread recently, and I think it (miraculously) came to a consensus...
The actual rule about the cover save (I'm too lazy to get my BGB, so someone else can actually look this up) rule states that if the cover save is made, then the hit is discarded. So no, the pen hit did NOT take place.

Additionally, even if it werent "discarded", but "ignored", then by paying attention to it (removing QS) you are not ignoring it.

And the problem is solved to my favor
Q: If a vehicle with Quantum Shielding passes a cover
save against a penetrating hit, does it lose the bonus to
its armour value? (p82)
A: No.
Gotta love official FAQ
