Subject: New necrons: Opinions on balance etc?

Well, a bit of background first.
I was playing with my new necrons last night, against space marines, in one turn, my doomsday ark took his predator, my deathmarks took out A 10 man terminator unit, anhiliation barge killed 6 of a unit of 10. " 10 man warrior squads maimed the rest of his units (getting at least 2-3 kills per squad)
And his HQ fell to a tesserect labyrinth in CC with my overlord nd warriors.
Then 7 of my 10 man warrior unit reanimated.....(with help from a res orb, to be fair)
My oponant then calls me a "cheating bastard" and demanded to read my army list and codex, 15mins of him using a calculator later, and he conceedes the battle, and refuses to play me in future....0.0
So.....what the hell just happened?? are people really that madface about the necrons?

He's a sore loser, he called you a cheating ba#terd over a simple game, he lost and completely over reacted and should apologise to you, I'd just never go near him if he acts like that.
|
The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy. |

You had some very lucky rolling there.
On to the subject at hand, this guy sounds like TFG, and not the kind of people you really want to play with. Necrons are probably one of the most balanced Dexes that has been put out this edition, they just come with a lot of tools that can shake up the conventional armies we see a lot.

I would smack that guy in the face with my codex if he called me a cheating bastard when I was playing fair.
Necrons are not an OP army, if he thinks that that he should get a copy of the codex, and read everything in it until he realizes that he's just a poor sport.

Just like every Codex the Necrons are not OP or UP as many would claim them to be. I have only recently put them on the table and every time I play some one screams OP. I have lost some, won some and well thoroughly got my a-- handed to me a couple of times especially in the beginning. I have since discovered as I play more that every army has a weakness and a strength, learning to play to your strengths and cover your weakness is the only way to properly play(thus the term strategy). I personally wouldn't play with a person like that especially since it sounds like he had poor tactical strategy more than anything else. But for the sake of argument I would say that the Necrons are just as balanced as any army out there.

My first game with one and it killed a Leman Russ, caused a blobbed platoon to run off the board and neutered a CCS leaving just some dude with a lasgun.
Since then it's done jack all. They are temperamental beasts. Either awesome or a waste, there is no in between. -.-

I wouldnt call it an OP dex.... Its got some good stuff in it for sure.....
This whining is happening more I find now that other Dexes are becoming equal to SM. SM have had the upper hand for years..
Watching a SM player getting tabled is becoming more common.... and when the almight SM get beaten fans boys whine.
That along with the fact the alpha strike in this game is crucial.... Going first always helps.

lol that's one of the funniest jokes I've ever heard. Vanilla Space Marines have always been middle of the road, with the occasional nasty build or unit. Also please don't make sweeping generalizations of Space Marine players. It's ignorant and rude.
Sounds like you rolled really well and the dude was being a sore loser. Most of that stuff just sounds like hot dice on your end and bad dice on his. There's no other way I can think of for deathmarks to kill 10 Terminators whatsoever. Necrons are a good codex on par with Space Marines, with some tricks that people haven't figured out yet.

I've played SM for almost 25 years. Imperial Fists, Blood Angels and my own chapter.... SM on any given day can muster a victory. That in itself to, me anyways, proves SM are a powerful army. They can deal with anything coming their way and have a reasonable chance to win. The new dexes are coming into line with this and once again the DE, Crons etc can win games in any situation as well...... Tau though still suck and need that new dex to compete as well... The main reason SM players whine is to be honset the fact that a majority of people who play SM are children. They tend to whine more than adults.....

Saying they can win and that they're competitive doesn't mean they have the upper hand in all situations. They've always been a solid codex in the middle of the road, and have a chance to beat or be beaten by anything. The only codex I'd say Space Marines did have an upper hand against was the old Necron codex, but my grandma on a day she forgets her dentures would have the upper hand against that old book.
Most of the whining I've seen on Dakka hasn't been from Marine players explicitly, just from people who like to complain about anything and everything. I haven't known Marine players to whine more than anyone else.

Actually my experience with the necron codex originally led to believe they were still underpowered. They didn't address their main weaknesses of short ranged firepower and low initiative. I cant count how many times I ran down a unit that still had half its number or an expensive character in it. from my perspective it's pretty bad if your army can get run down by orks or tau.
I since have seen some cheese from them but it had nothing to with the units mentioned

The only two problems I have with the new 'dex is with the severe lack of ranged weaponry for Overlords/Lords, and the overcosted Triarch Praetorians. Also, if Preferred Enemy does affect shooting, Heavy Destroyers get a lot better. Why it doesn't in the first place is beyond me, but hey.
Also, I think that whoever playtested the new necrons got very lucky rolls the entire time. Init 2 is not good, and there is very, VERY little stat variation through the codex. I mean, look at all of the HQ units; only Varguard Obyron and Illuminator Szeras have different Stats, not including the Destroyer Lord. Also, the lack of ranged weaponry past 24" (there are only a few, two of which are infinite range) and the implied railroading to CC due to the insane amount of CC options isn't good, especially with initiative 2.
Then the units like Praetorians or Lychguard, who are hardy, extremely well-trained bodyguards and warriors, whose stats don't reflect that. Like, at all. The ONLY "bodyguard" worth his bananas is Obyron, and he has WS6 SV2+.
Not to mention that Overlords are oddly priced, especially compared to the new Grey Knights. I mean, for 100 points you get WS6, I5, a 2+ sv and a 4++ sv, 3++ if you use a Nemesis Force Sword. Now compare that too an Overlord, who has S5, T5, and a 3+ sv. for +10 points you get S7 and 2d6 AP rolls... at I2. No extra BS or WS for the millennia old Overlords, but those Grey Knights have WS5+ like there was a sale.
The only saving grace of the Necrons is their reanimation protocols and their Cryptek/dimensional shenanigans. Some units are oddly priced, others are overcosted. Some options, like ranged weapons for HQs, are mysteriously absent.
That being said, the Necron codex allows for interesting combinations, and in fact its limitations actually force you to craft an army that works well together. Although on good days you will never lose a single unit because of Reanimation Protocols.

I just had a 1000 pts game against them with Tyranids and won. He had two overlords with multiple upgrades, tesla immortals, warriors and a monolith. I had a cheap footslogging army that outnumbered him greatly and we were playing an objective game.
From what I can tell, they're balanced and winning depends on your list and tactics.
