Subject: Old models and fluff. I need something clearing up.

Now i apologise before i even begin to type. I read the odd black library book and read the codexes but that is literally the limit of my knowledge of the 40k universe.
My question arises because a fellow dakka-goer informed me last week that my Mk 1 rhinos are still legal models in the game as they "accuratley represent what they are suposed to be".
Now in the 40k fluff, i know it is hard to track down a "modern day" so to speak but are the mk 1 rhinos still in production? still used by astartes and sisters? And for that matter what about the old land raiders and predators?
If they are, as i suspect, an older technology but are still in service in many armies it raises the question of: Do older models generally represent what things looked like in the past of the 40k fluff? Old looking rhinos? Old looking Tyranid bioforms? Older looking eldar helmets and creatures that have since died out or gone away like zoats.
In short could it be argued that some models from the 80's and 90's suposed to be from a different historical era than models that have replaced them in the 00's.
- P.S i am not trolling, just incredibly ignorant :p!

Well no.
They are mostly awesome and perfectly legal but in-universe they aren't really around.
Don't let that dissuade you though, Mk.1 rhinos are awesome.

So mk1s are kind of, eradicated from existence as far as fluff goes. they never existed? like the squats ...lol
or they are just not used anymore?
PS- Its a shame, i love some of the goofier old tyranid models, loved the idea that the current models may have evolved from them haha

Most destroyed those that remain, guarded as relics.
You probably could say the new nids evolved from the old ones...

It depends on the model. Some items like jet bikes and Mk I Rhinos and old Land Raiders have been fluffed in just such a way, e.g. they used to be common, they no longer are. Jet bike tech is said to be lost and only a few exist anymore, and old Rhinos and Land Raiders are just rare, though ForgeWorld makes some awesome models of the old land raiders.
Other things we just assume were mis-information. Remember, all fluff is canon in that it all may be from a misinformed source, propaganda, misremembered, or outright lies. So we say, yes, some uneducated hive scum or textbook on a feudal world thought space marines were just what they did with criminals, SoB were there to police them, C'tan are descended from Khaine worshippers, the mass of an imperial battleship implies it is made of styrofoam, and there is a half eldar librarian.
Or, hey, maybe all of that is actually correct and everything contradicting it is just Imperial propaganda! Unlikely, but possible.
So it changes item by item. There are no set rules for what things mean in 40k. And, personally, I like it that way. It is a lot like how the real world works.

Fair point. Adds a bit of mystery to the universe as well i supose.
Cant help feeling like Winston Smith in 1984 now though...questioning...what is the true past...is there such a thing as a true past...perhaps if GW control the present then they control the past..i never heard of a squat...i imagined it...i must have.
Jokes aside thanks for the insight @riplikash i had never thought about it like that and i quite like the misinformation, propoganda and rumour idea.
Edit: Yay i just got upgraded to a groveling Grot with that last post...today was a good day.

The new Rhino variant was only created in like the 34th millenium. The Imperium is using tech from thousands of years before that, as is the Imperium a large place and Mechanicus Magi a close minded bunch, so it could be that in areas there still are old versions of weapons being produced as the standard armaments. =P

Doesn't the Rhino that Vulkan used to use still exist? I'm sure Iv'e read somewhere that it is still used by the Salamanders or that it is in some kind of museum for people to gawp at. It even has it's own name although it escapes me at the mo.

I recall having read that Mk Is are prized relics for the chapters fortunate enough to keep one.
We held a short campaign once in which the objective for the Blood Angels player was to retrieve an ancient Mk I from the claws of an Ork Mek. Fun little game it was.

Nothing is special about them. They are just the original models of the Rhino tank, which GW manufactured for the first fifteen years or so of the game's life.
They're a bit smaller than the current era of Rhino models.

Not that they're *that* special... But, like RT-era Land Raiders, they're used to represent old, pre-Heresy variants of the Rhino.

They aren't 'that' special but considering the nature of the Imperium they're prized beyond belief...

Double-ninja'ed. Good job, mates
I got my Rhinos on Games Day '98. Two were extensively... er... modified for Orky usage. The other was traded to a space marine player for a boatload of ugly 2nd ed. orks.
Recently, I was able to repair one of the two looted ones with the bitz left of the (sadly unrecoverable for Imperial use) other vehicle. I got it painted, added enough purity seals to increase its operative weight by a healthy ton and sold it to an Iron Hands player. I may or may not field the remaining Rhino as a Looted Wagon, if I ever gather the energy and motivation required to strip the horrible paintjob I gave it back in the day.
The Blood Angels' MkI. Rhino is property of our FLGS' owner. Started life as a transport for Khorne Berserkers and has been restored and converted back for loyalist use by a (really) talented local artist. It's now on store display.
Yea, I know. That's not exactly Background stuff. But those toys REALLY have stories behind them. Now try to imagine the real thing, after 10.000 years of service.
The Chapter who still owns one must be really attached to it.

"Look, battle brothers, how our chapter relics deliver our fury to the enemy! That Rhino in particular fought with honor in the Battle of Pentes and the Battle of Damnation's Peak, survived the Qintarran Insurrections, valiantly rammed the War-Constructs of the Gerontocracy of Mineas, fought the armies of the Arch-Traitor on Luna, smashed through Urshak The Monster's retinue of armored bodyguards, allowing Brother-Captain Alphonso to deliver the killing blow that decapitated the huge ork warlord, transported the thrice-honored Squad Ullianus to safety during the Gallean Revolts of M.33, took part in the liberation of Corsica Prime, received the blessings of Canoness Basilia after the daemon-purge of Gentes IV, assisted Assault Squad Valente in taking the Bridge of Tears during the conquest of Yilth, is said to have been Brother Enrico's personal vehicle during the campaign against the *BOOOOOM*... gasp!" Yep, it's more or less like this. All the time.

They aren't THAT much smaller than the mk2s.
A couple of cm overall. Not like you can physically fit 10 marines in either.
ALL SM hardware is a "holy" relic, and stuff going back to the crusades, doubly so.
You can bet that every chapter (probably bar the Crimson fists, who blew their fortress monastery up).
