I've been wanting to paint tattoos on some of my models and have tried it with poor results using a .5 mm ink pen. This gives me the fine tip and precision, but the color is far too dark and doesn't look right.

I've heard some people use a mixture of green and black for this. Anyone have any recommendations for the best color mix to make decent tatts?

Thanks

I think you've just used the wrong colour. Your local art shop should have a big selection of colours, something in a dull mid/dark-blue would probably look right.

Maybe use the micron pen for the tattoo, but not as the last step of painting the skin, but an intermediate one. If the tattoo is washed after it is applied, it should look much more natural.

This. Use a dark blue or grey/black, just after doing the mid tone on the skin. Then glaze up further highlights. A glaze medium really helps to keep the layers translucent. Remember a tattoo is ink *under* the skin, not on it.

and its kind of depending what kind of tattoos you wanna make. fine line arts are really hard to do but shapes are more forgiving.
as said before use a dark grey, dark blue or dark green mixed with grey. wash it and touch up around it.
dont forget to highight it!

This is by far the best guide I've found on painting tattoos, it goes into good detail, and the results are amazing

I wish I could paint half as good.
