I'll preempt my own question by first asking do you think the below could work considering the current points sizes of games, FoC setup and general rules?
If not could one adapt them?
I dont have my 2nd ed rulebook at hand so these are from memory but in 2nd 40k there was a much bigger selection/range of missions for games. Feel free to correct any mistakes I have made.
These included:
Take & hold: Capture an objective point 24" onto the table 36" from the left hand side
Dawn Raid: Get a squad with less than 50% casualties or an undamaged vehicle into enemy deployment zone
Witch Hunt: Kill (primary) or wound (secondary) most powerful enemy psyker and kill enemy characters worth 50pts or more (secondary)
Bunker Assault: Capture (primary) or destroy (secondary) enemy bunkers
Hold the line: No enemy squads with more than 50% casualties or undamaged vehicles in your table half (primary) and keep your bunkers intact (secondary)
Engage & Destroy: Bonus for each enemy squad, vehicle and character destroyed
Guerrilla Warfare: Bonus for every X number of enemy models killed in hand-to-hand (primary). Bonus for each enemy vehicle destroyed or disabled in your table half (secondary)
High Ground: Bonus for each squad with less than 50% casualties within 3" of three highest points (primary). Bonus if squad has heavy weapon intact (secondary)
The Assassins: Kill (primary) or wound (secondary) enemy commander
Special Tyranid Missions
Trap: Bonus for getting Tyranid models between enemy and board edge
Terrorize: Bonus for every break, fear or terror test enemy failed (primary). Bonus for enemy characters killed or wounded (secondary)
Tyranid Attack: Wipe out every enemy model to win, any Tyranid units destroyed are brought back on from the Tyranid players table edge next turn. Game lasts 6 turns instead of the usual 4
In short I loved the fact there were lots of missioon types and variations and miss the variety compared to 5th.
Would these work in 5th or be brought back to 6th?

Have look at the battle missions book. Some of those missions have made a comeback there,
|
7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Yeah I've read it but to me the majority of the missions are some variation of C&C, take a point and hold it, still quite one dimensional imho.
I know there is an assassination type one and another that deals with deployment zones but they are limited.
I'd just like to see a big revamp of the missions.
I recall too in 2nd ed each side could have a different mission, so you might have bunker assault but I might have assassination.
Made for some ultra tactical games - do your heavy hitters go after my bunker or protect your HQ unit from my assault etc etc.

My favorite part about it was the idea of hidden missions - eac side pulled their card and kept it face down, so you had to infer from your enemy's actions what their ultimate goal was.
And yes, with some slight modifications, they can work great in 5th - a couple of my buddies and I use them when we get bored of the same 3 missions all the time.

See this makes a lot of sense, It keeps things interesting and can make for a number of great scenarios. I really hope they add more attack/defence style missions. I know we have things like planet strike, but I want to more of them for regular play.

More variety to the game can only be a good thing. Some of those might not be balanced for tournament play, but for friendly games they look like a blast.

I wish they had more games where the only objective was to blast each other with marines.
Assasination sounds like fun, but it's way too easy for GK to simply walk up and beat the enemy to a pulp with NFWs.

I highly recommend getting the old strategy and mission cards out. We did it one night and with some slight abridging it was the best game we`ve had since 2nd edition.

Honestly, "kill the enemy HQ" can be done pretty easily with any army.

If it could be done pretty easily with any army, wouldn't that make for an interesting game?

I like the assassin mission and bunker assault. They sound pretty fun
Take and hold was in 4th ed I think, and that version worked fine. The 2nd ed version seems to favor big tables, which most don't have.
The Bonus for CC I don't like...too much of an advantage for GK, BA and nids.
