Typically they are spaced out over a few months. In NJ I have played in a few where every month there is a 3 round tournment. Match up's are a flowing matchup's of best records from Rd1, play best record Rd2, this continues throughout. If you want to win at the end, essentially you keep playing the winning players. That way, people typically end up playing people on their same army level.
Month 1: 750 pts, 3 rounds. Basic Scenario's.
Month 2: 1000 pts, 3 rounds. Book Scenario's.
Month 3: 1250 pts, 3 rounds. Book Scenario's with bonus points, killing general, high cost unit.
Month 4: 1500 pts, 3 rounds. Scenarios, Primary and Secondary Objective.
Month 5: 1750 pts, 3 rounds. Scenarios, Primary, Seconary, Tretiary Objectives.
Month 6: 2000 pts, 3 rounds, top 2 from each weeks winners meet with a fully painted army required to enter.
Its a lot of fun. The goal is every week there is a painting score. If your entire army is painted you get a bonus. If not its just your best painted model. Painting is not a high perchentage, but can help you move up the ladder quickly. So your rewarded for having 100% painted. I played in 2 ... the winner didn't have a painted army, simply smashed his opponents in battle points.
