Hello all! Just wanted to see if I am understanding the model line and CSM codex correctly. CSM, Chosen, and Havocs, do they all use the same models? From what I can tell, there is no difference, aside from what wargear they are carrying, most notably lascannons, autocannons and the like.

If I were to buy a box of CSM, can I effectively make them into Chosen or Havocs, if I also get the correct guns?

Thanks!

When it comes to things like this, just ask yourself the following:
- Are they identifiable as Chaos Space Marines of some variety?
- Are they equipped appropriately?
If the answer is yes to both, you're golden. You can just use stock Chaos Space Marines and give them autocannons or what have you and you could have havocs. Give them a bunch of meltas and you've got Chosen. It's one of the strengths of the Space Marine lines. It's a good idea to model them distinctly though, for both the game's sake and because it can look cool. A lot of people kitbash Dark Angels robed torsos and Chaos Marine equipment to make their Chosen, as they're supposed to be veterans.

I'm sorry I am just a little bit confused by your response, please excuse my misunderstanding. Just as an example, can I use this model http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440212a&prodId=prod1090572 as part of a Chosen unit?

Thanks for any type of clarification!

Yes, a box of regular CSM can cover a LOT of units. With some conversion work and the right bitz ordered, you can make them into literally any of the nearly half dozen troops choices, as well as chosen and havocs, but also raptors, posessed, and any HQ choice that isn't either a demon prince, or wearing terminator armor.

If you're really good at converting, or are running a khorne list (or both), you can buy berzerkers instead of regular CSM, as the berzerker box costs the same as the CSM, but gives you two more power armor bodies for free.

Simple answer: Yes.

CSMs can come right out of the box. Havocs need more special weapons or heavy weapons. I would put more detail and bits on the minis you want to make Chosen so they look a little different from the base CSMs.

You can also do things like buy a box or two of Space wolves marines, and some CSMs and mix and match for totally unique and interesting looking chaos marines. I have so many different kinds of models in my chaos armies it isn't funny.

But the basic answer to your question is: Yes they are pretty much the same.
