At the locals store, there will be a tournament set at 750 points. Looking to break out my Salamanders after over 1/2 a year, but, at 190, Vulkan seems like alot of the points. So, what is the best non named character for an HQ slot?

Can I get an idea of what you are fielding in the rest of your army?

5 drop pods
ironclad dread
dreadnaught w/ multi melt (aobr)
5 man tactical squad
10 man tactical squad
10 man tactical squad
5 scout bikers
10 man assault marines
5 vanguard vets w/ jump packs
cpt w/ command squad

that is what I have, I know, not alot to work with, but, 750 points. I have a chaplain and also a librarian w/ jump packs.

Just looking for a starting point. If possible, I will run vulkan, but, not sure.

Librarians are the internet's preferred low-cost HQ for Marines of any kind.

I would say a standard 100 point librarian is the most cost effective HQ and stops other psychic powers. He will die eventually but will shut down psychic powers and buff your army with his powers.

Seeing as how I rarely use librarians, what powers should I give him? I haven't played my marines alot lately, like over a year, and never realy used the librarian, so, could use some help on that.

if you take hammernators take null zone on the libby so pesky invuls dont bother you. Then either, gate, curse, or avenger I guess.

But, at that low of a points threshold, someone a bit beefier to take on dedicated CC without hammernators might be in order. Like a captain with relic blade, SS in the command squad with a rhino might serve you there.

I can also tell you a thunderfire cannon is primo at any points level, especially lower.

I say if you dont want a libby a chaplian is second best for fearless and rerolls on assault in a squad. After that I would recommend named chars, or a captain on a bike with relic blade. Still, the first choice is a libby.

Yeah, the Libby is the best support character in an SM army. A Chaplin is more useful in an assault based SM army.

At small pt levels, you need numbers and firepower, in this order.
