If you want to build the bog-standard 'Nid competitive list, you're pretty well on the money, except dropping one of the tyrants and the strangethorn cannon for Tyrand guard and at least 4 more Hive Guard. Maybe the prime as well...

Personal opinion: but I find this kind of list boring to play. I reccomend sampling some of the more wacky choices in the 'dex, like gargoyles, warriors, raveners or shrikes. Stuff that is semi-competitive, that most players aren't used to.

Actually i was planning to get some raverner or shrikes. This is a 1750 list anyway.

What do you think the best wargear for a hive tyrant?

I wasn't aware that Genestealers where such a staple of competitive Tyranid lists... quite the opposite, I thought?

Anyway, t looks good. Raveners are probably going to dissapoint you if you fight Marines frequently; Shrikes will tear through anything, just make sure you have them screened properly.

My most used loadout for a Tyrant is 2x Devourers for the dakka, although a midfield Tyrant with Old Adversary is quickly winning my heart. Dont leave home without either Tyrant Guard or Wings.

Old Adversary is a must-take on just about any hive tyrant.

CC tyrants work best, but it can be a good idea to take a single ranged weapon to fire along with a psychic power. A set of devourers is a good choice. Lashwhips are awesome, so never drop that.

If your tyrant is walking, then take tyrant guards to help it get easy cover saves. (so long as at least half the models in a unit are in cover, the whole unit gets a cover save. Tyrant Guard don't have to worry about the 50% of model cover rule for monstrous creatures, so as long as they are in cover they give the tyrant a save too).
Give the guards lashwhips, once again because lash whips are made of awesome.

It's also a good idea to take armoured shell on a walking tyrant, so the occasional krak missile can be allocated to a 2+ save.

If you have 3 or more units in your list coming in from reserve, then take Hive Commander.

Just 1 is going to be a lot of points, and they don't bring a particularly amazing amount of firepower.

Also, just 1 isn't going to be easy to kill with 2 Tyrant Guard. I wouldn't bother at anything less than 2500 points.

Genestealers are very good, and a staple in 90% of competitive builds. If you want competitive advice, look to the following.

synaps3.blogspot.com

Go to the very beginning and start reading. He goes from what I would consider an average player to a legitimate 'competitive' player over the course of his posting. There's also links in there to some useful and insightful information.

In addition, check out;

Hulksmash is another notable Tyranid player, you can find him at;

Long story short -
You might be able to make a competitive list without Genestealers, just like you might be able to make a competitive BA list without assault marines. There's no reason -not- to play them if you want to do well.

If you're not worried about 'competitive' playing, and just want to roll dice with friends or at the FLGS, you can play literally whatever you want and tailor for your local metagame (What everyone else plays) based on that. I know people who never play against fully mechanized armies, and only need 1 unit of Hive Guard to do well. Then you have people who play nothing but mech armies and can barely survive with 3 units of Hive Guard.

As for your list, well, you're spending 500+ points on 2 MCs that will likely get shot to pieces and do very little. The best advice I can give you to start is that quantity is a quality all it's own. I'd advise playing it and seeing where it's weaknesses and strengths are then go from there.

I'm guessing English isn't your first language, so I'll ask you to try reading my post again and if you still don't understand then I'll do my best to communicate the message to you in a way you can. Not trying to sound condescending or anything like that at all, just trying to help.
