Recently acquired some IG and I want to get a solid list for some games I'm going to be playing next week. I'm currently restricted by the models I have, but I'd be willing to buy a couple of boxes if it'd providing a significant boost in the effectiveness of the army. I looked around a couple of threads and this is what I came up with:
CCS (4 plasma guns, chimera) - 165
4x Vets (3 melta, chimera) - 155 ea
Leman Russ BT squad (2 of them) 300
Leman Russ Executioner 190
Hydra Squad (3 of them) 225
Total comes to 1500 exactly. I also have 2 vendetta/valkyries, a hellhound/banewolf/devil dog (can switch out guns), and a psyker battle squad. Would adding an infantry platoon be useful?
Any comments or criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Your have alot of target priorety which will make it hard for your opponent. You have enough anti tank at close range just none at long range, well the hydras but they're not the best for heavy vehicles but keep them. I'll let the other boys get you sorted out for the rest and clean my say up.

As a primarily IG player, I have to say, you acquired a VERY nice starting IG force. Took me a good year or so to get Hydras. Nothing that you listed is bad, it just might not all work together as smoothly as you might like vs all comers.
Ninja is 100% right about this being a very threatening list up close, but less so at long range. If that fits your meta game, have a blast (literally). A more rounded list might drop the executioner and one of the LRBTs to add the 2 vendettas.
2 Hydras are often just as effective as 3 at popping transports. Take your saved points and add that Psyker Battle Squad in a Chimera. Shooting things and then scaring them off the table is oddly satisfying.
The Vet Chi-Squads don't ALL have to have 3 meltas. Switch some over to plasma or grenade launchers, add a Vet Auto-cannon heavy weapons team, and maybe even a Primus Psyker and you have a very tough to move base/objective defender
IG is all about the special gun options. Shooting the right gun at the right time at the right target solves most of your problems. Good luck

He doesn't need a PBS, he needs long range AT.
Drop the Executioner and one Hydra for 265pts.
Add in two Vendettas for 260pts
Split up your LRBTs.
Use the last 5pts to get a melta bomb or a couple of bolt pistols for sergeants.
You have good instincts, your list is otherwise pretty solid. Better than most first timers I see here. Mech Guard is boring to me, but a solid tactic and list.
A Platoon could be added for higher point games to give you a rear objective holder and additional long range firepower with HWTs in the blob and HWS.
But your current list, you can not hold back, you have to table your foe or capture objectives on his half of the board.
Make sure your Chimeras have hull heavy flamers (they are a free swap out) and understand your LRBTs are anti-infantry vehicles, not true tanks. Play and read the rules concerning the rules of your units/equipment and you should be fine.

Most of the time that I play Mech IG now, I just try and table my opponent and mostly ignore objectives till turn 5. You don't need to CAPTURE objectives on your opponents half, but a last minute vendetta flat out to CONTEST one might be crucial

Hi folks, I'm looking at sorting out my IG army as it's a bit noobish and I'm struggling to beat my mates DE. I've read pretty similar tactics on several forums now. Can you just clarify exactly what you mean by "table my opponent"? It's looking like Vets in Chims are the way forward over regular infantry platoons?
Also, where do people get all these Hydras from? They all come from Forgeworld?!
