HH era. Or before, when conquering the galaxy for Mankind actually meant something. When hope existed, and we could believe that something lay beyond all the bloodshed. Don't get me wrong, I still believe in the Imperium, but now we're just fighting because it's our duty to fight, not because we're fighting for a greater goal, like when the Emperor and the Primarchs stood at the front, when the Imperium was young and vigorous, not like now when it's rotted by those damned bureaucrats and the blind fools of the Ecclesiarchy, when we could trust one another, but now we look at one another with fearful caution, and when the future was something we knew could dream of - the golden dream of galactic unity and Human progress. It was gold and glass once, now, all is dust...for the Emperor...

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

40k. Sure Big E got betrayed by Horus, sure its crumbling. This is the end times, mankind stands on the brink of destruction, yet for all that there is hope. This is the time for heros, men who will step up and say, feth no, I will not go quietly into the night. Makes for good reading. Rather than the HH, imo.

True. Our glories may be past, and our realm grows tarnished, but until the Emperor returns or passes on, we will never despair. Our duty remains, and only the Emperor may relieve us of that. Until then, we will fight to the last brother; such will be the last loyal triumph of the XV Legion Astartes, the final redemption of the Fourth Fellowship.

Fair enough, playable races then.
Marine vs Marine gets real old real fast imho (assuming they dont utterly revamp the rules and really push the boundaries).

Wait, is this just from a fluff perspective?

Don't you mean 30K?

But 40K all the way. Marine vs. Marine armies are god forsakenly boring and overdone. Everything about the Space Marines just screams boredom. So bring on the Sisters and Guard! They don't get the luxury to pick and choose their fights unlike the Mahreens. They fight back Xenos and Chaos by sheer will and steely guts. Can't say the same for the Mahreens, they had to have fear removed and courage installed in their genes. Wusses.

If they went out to make it more and more like Mankind really is on the brink of destruction, that they're being pushed back, hemmed in by enemies, weeding out parasites and those seeking to destroy the Imperium from the inside, then I will say 40k. Just feels as though it's going the wrong way at the moment, that it doesn't feel as if mankind is desperately trying to survive, more like it's just surviving and even pushing their enemies back.

Also 40k = beloved Death Korp of Krieg.

While I find the HH novels fun reading, I still think they should have left that era to the mists of time and just had fragmentary accounts of large battles.

The Heresy was far more interesting when all we knew about was the Istvaan massacres and a couple of other big events, and the hows and whyfors were all left intentionally vague. It made it feel like the 40k universe had a real 'history', where legions of Space Marines did battle and the primarchs were gods walking amongst them, and the Emperor was a god amongst those.

Now that they're actually writing in depth about the battles, the characters, the primarchs, etc it's losing its lustre. Again, don't get me wrong, they're fun reads, but every book makes the 40k universe lose a little bit of its 'history'.

On topic, and seriously, I prefer 40k. Let's face it, the real humanity will be crumbling well before the year 40,000... So whatwill 40k be like for us? Fractured and rotting, like the fluff is.

I see what you mean Loki and I can understand and empathise. The HH doesn't interest me that much, all-in-all - it's always been a mysterious time like the Dark Age of Strife where something really, really bad happened, but I felt wonderfully ignorant. When I first read the short story at the beginning of the Inquisitor skirmish game rulebook, of the four people discussing what should be done about the God-Emperors body I felt as though I was privy to some intimate knowledge about something which no-one knew about.

One of the things I do like with 40k over Fantasy, slightly off-topic but hey, is how much bigger 40k feels. To really deviate, one element of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy I've always loved was the Total Perspective Vortex which showed a person their place and importance in the enormity of the universe, an invisible dot upon an invisible dot upon an invisible dot, infinitely small, with a tag saying "You are here.". Now thats how the Imperium feels to me, like an absolutely enormous place (well, a million planets is a lot) where my armies, regiments, fictional characters are irrelevant, almost invisible amidst the mass of humanity that lives among the stars.

Fantasy feels cramped in comparison and too defined. There's little room for mystery, little room for creativity, in my eyes. I'm not saying you can't come up with your own stuff but I feel there's little room for 'manouvering' your stuff into it in a believable way. Not sure I'm getting it across, to be honest.

In short, to me, in 40k almost anything can be done. In Fantasy, it feels more limited.

I found your lack of faith in our race disturbing. It is our destiny to ascend to the stars, and I do hope I will be alive when we establish first colonies on Luna and Mars.
And I do hope that I will be alive when they finally break trough the warp barrier and invent FTL.

I'm studying Material Science now, so I'll be making use of nanomachines. Hey, I just might indefinitely extend my life-span and get to see the beginning of the Golden Age of Technology.
