Hi everyone. just a quick question. I'm starting a CSM army, and I noticed the CSM troop choice lists their wargear to include a bolt pistol, a close combat weapon, and a bolter. Would this mean that a regular CSM would gain an extra attack in CC for having two CC weapons (pistol and CC weapon) or does this only happen with the way the model is assembled, following the rules of WYSIWYG? I guess what I am asking is that do CSMs gain an extra attack in CC whether they are modeled to have the bolter, or pistol and CC weapon.

Thanks!!

They gain an extra attack in CC from having a CC weapon and a pistol.
Exactly like Grey Hunters.

They gain the extra attack regardless of modelling. Pretty cool, huh?

Dammit, why did I not think of that before! I completely forgot that my bolter marines would get that.

Thank you for posting this!

No way!!!! That is freaking sweet! So that means you are free to model the unit as you please. But obviously if the marine has a flamer or other weapon, that needs to be on the model. OMG, freaking sweet, I love my CSM even more. Dont hate on me for being a noob lol

No worries.
It's better to check rather than play a game with an unfair advantage or disadvantage...

I've been playing CSM for years and I didn't spot it, I wouldn't call you a noob! Even experienced players can overlook these things.

Yeah, wysiwyg is much more for the purposes of weapons that have special rules, rather than just default wargear.

I mean, your CSM come with bolters, bolt pistols, chainswords, frag grenades, krak grenades, and occasionally icons. There's no way you're fitting that all on a model without it looking dumb, and you're probably not given enough bitz in the kit to show everything anyways.

Remember that the minis you're using are playing pieces that represent the abstractions of things in your codex. The individual models have the rules, regardless of how you chose to represent them on the field.

wysiwyg is more of a courtesy to other players, and for modelling reasons as well, moreso than because the rules say so.

Plus, think about it in reverse. If a model doesn't have something that the codex says it has because it's not on the model, does that mean a model has something even though the codex doesn't say it can have it just because it's on the model?

Were that the case, all of my guardsmen would get powerfists. After all, they've got them because they're modeled with them. This is precisely why wysiwyg doesn't trump rules and codecies.

I didn't catch it until a couple games in. I was imagining that it was included in their profile or something.

As ailaros said, it's more of a courtesy thing, although some people take it as law. Totally depends on your local scene. I've met guys who used tyranids as tacticals and ork nobs as devastators in the same game. That's a bad example, but I don't really think you should have to model obligatory items like grenades and bolt pistols just for the sake of making those people happy

Just make sure you actually give them the CCW, so you don't have to explain that they're drawing a chainsword out of nowhere like Highlanders.
