Subject: Viability of a Necrons "Silver Tide" list?

I was wondering how well you think a Silver tide list would do? Using a bunch of warriors of course.
6 squads of 20 Warriors, with 3 Ghost arks behind them, led by a normal, no upgrades overlord, comes out to 1995 points. Not as many models as a Ork "Green Tide" but it's still a hefty chunk of things on the board. 124 models total.

Considering how hard it is to kill warriors, alongside ghost ark support, I'd say it's pretty awesome. Problem is you really have no way to hurt tougher enemies, like MCs. If you could find someway to throw some scarbs in there it'd be perfect.

Would be really fun, but will have its strengths and weaknesses. For one, pie plate weapons will hurt, since it has no long range anti-tank.
And even with a lord, they may still be swept. So, those lists with one or two rock hard dedicated assault units with a fighty SC in it will be happy because they will basically take out one big squad per combat round with luck.

While shooty armies can't kill them all, you have only anti-infantry firepower yourself. You also loose any game against cc specialists. Thundercav, assault termies etc multicharging those massive units = painfull

Major Motoko Kusanagi: It's simple: Overspecialize, and you breed in weakness. It's slow death.
This quote from an awesome movie describes the problem with a silver tide army.
When you face an army that is not designed to take down your necrons, you will take their lunch money and send your opponent away swimming in a river of his own tears.
I would wager that maybe 1/2 of your games in competitive play will be like that. I know that it would be a very hard matchup for my mech'dar army.
The problem is that the other 1/2 of your games, you will face an opponent who has the right tools for the job, and they will take your lunch money and send you home swimming in a river of your own tears.
Be it DCA's that assault you, or that guy who actually took 3 dakka preds, or the guard player with manticores and LRBTs. Imagine what some DPs could do to your army if you cant get your lord on them, and with lash, they can ensure your lord does not get into assault.
Furthermore, one of the tricks with a foot army is that you neutralize your opponents heavy anti-tank weaponry. With only 3 AV 13 vehicles, any decent army will take them down in 2-3 turns of firing.
If you wanted to still go with a silver tide, i would drop the ghost arcs and ensure you have enough eldrich lances and tak arrows to do some good at range. After all, you will need to earn a few KPs so you can flat out deny any return KPs on you.

My approach to Silver Tide is currently borne out of the models I have available, namely two Ghost Arks and 36 Warriors.
I plan (still under construction!) to field them as follows...
10 Warriors + Ghost Ark
10 Warriors + Ghost Ark
16 Warriors + Orb Lord
You embark the squads of 10 Warriors in their Arks and position them either side of your 16 Warriors. Arks are open topped so the embarked Warriors can still fire (from behind a AV13 shield ). The good bit is that you can use both Arks to restore fallen Warriors from the larger unit, which combined with the Orb Lord makes it very durable while the Arks are still in one piece.
As others have noted, a unit with some hand to hand ability in the immediate vicinity is a good idea though.

Well, what if instead of Ghost ark, their was Annihilation Barges? Taking out the 3 arks would give me more than enough for some ABs.....

Keeping with the metal tide theme I would roll something like this:
HQ
Overlord
Phaeron+ WS/ MSS 135
Overlord
Phaeron+ WS/ MSS 135
Lord+ WS/ MSS/ RO 90
Lord+ WS/ MSS/ RO 90
HofDestruction+ SP 55
HofDestruction+ SP 55
HofDestruction 35
HofDestruction 35
Troops
20 Warriors 260
(Olord/lord)
20 Warriors 260
(Olord/lord)
5 Warriors+ GA 180
(PulseTek)
5 Warriors+ GA 180
(PulseTek)
8 Warriors 104
(LanceTek)
8 Warriors 104
(LanceTek)
Heavy Support
A-Barge 90
A-Barge 90
A-Barge 90
1988
Would be fun.

I would love to see this at a tourney, IMHO it would be fun
I think you need to drop the barges and put something into the arcs (do necrons have any shooty elites or heavy support troops(?)

Shooty Elites would be Triarch Stalkers and DeathMarks
Closest thing to Heavy support Troops is Canoptek Spyders, but they can't get into transports because it's an MC

I love the idea of a Silver Tide list. But I think it's far more viable with Immortals than it is with Warriors. I think the 3+ save vs. the 4+ save is too great a difference to pass up when you're working with such large numbers of infantry. And more importantly, I think that the ability to take assault weapons is just about mandatory if you're thinking of a footslogging list, as you can never have more than 2x Phaerons in the army. Below is my take on a Silver Tide, with a nice mix of Phaeron+Gauss and Tesla. In any case though, I think that the Triarch Stalkers are just about must-takes with this kind of volume of firepower.
10x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
1x Lord w/ Hyperphase Sword, MSS, Rezorb
... points = 250
10x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
1x Lord w/ Hyperphase Sword, MSS, Rezorb
... points = 250
10x Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines
1x Lord w/ Hyperphase Sword, MSS, Rezorb
... points = 250
10x Immortals w/ Gauss Blasters
1x Overlord w/ Hyperphase Sword, Phaeron, MSS, Rezorb
1x Harbinger of Destruction w/ Eldritch Staff & Solar Pulse
... points = 390
10x Immortals w/ Gauss Blasters
1x Overlord w/ Warscythe, Phaeron, MSS, Rezorb
1x Harbinger of Destruction w/ Eldritch Staff & Solar Pulse
... points = 390
1x Triach Stalker
... points = 150
1x Triarch Stalker
... points = 150
1x Annihilation Barge w/ Gauss Cannon
... points = 90
1x Annihilation Barge w/ Gauss Cannon
... points = 90
Total points = 2000

Try cutting some warriors and taking 2 overlords and then stuffing your ghost arks full of crypteks.
Anti tank out the wazoo.
I really like lords with warscythe and mind shackles as well as phearon in an army like this. I'm still out on the rez orb, but I understand it's worth the points in a 20 man squad.
If you are really against anything not tide related, you could always take Nemesor zandrek to give a squad phearon and tank hunters. Each time they lucky6 glance a tank it's another six away from blowing up.

So I think two barges is enough support for infantry.. as the D3 models (twice) is enough to really help bring back the numbers, even from grievous wounds. But then you don't need to have massively large squads as MSU is better than a 20-strong blob, Especially with regeneration (from the Barge and RP).
So 10-15 strong squads? 2-3 squads? 2 Barges. But I cannot see the point of having a squad on foot compared to a squad in the vehicle. Unless you field a Lancetek in the barge to make use of it as a independently targeting gunboat.

Let me give it a shot. This list "only" has 100 but bear with me. 20 man squads of warriors just scream for an orb so I took out a squad of 20 for em. If my mathhammer is right it should actually more then pay for itself usually plus more warscafes. Scarabs are beast as hell and dirt cheap.

Zandrek doesn't have phearon, and you made me rush to my codex all excited like, for shame sir.
