I have a question about the gateway that allows reserves to come ou of it (drawing a blank on actual name ATM ).
If I remember correctly the DE codex states that you use the small blast template to mark it and that it counts as impassable terrain?
So my question is: is it otherwise a two-dimensional marker? It wouldn't provide any cover, nor block LOS correct?

GW released a special bubble model to use as a webway portal. It could hide infantry models and give concealment to smaller vehicles. I use a tree with a portal sculpted into it, and I rely on it to give cover to some of my units. I think it is much like using vehicles as cover. With TLOS, if you only use a blast template, it won't provide any cover.

I ran into this problem as well. If you use the blast template, it will not provide cover or block LOS, but the limited edition bubble thing that GW released would block LOS. When it came up, I did not take a cover save from my opponent shooting through the portal, but I do not have any rule quotes to back that up.

There was a thread about this a while back (year?) that went on and on. This was before I joined.
Now the way I see it is this. We are told the portal is impassable terrain and a marker, and terrain can block LoS. Seeing as how it is a GW produced item it is officially allowed into tournaments so one would use the marker and all benefits/negatives that it comes with seeing as how it is terrain that blocks LoS.
The issue was that what is defined as simmilar being same shape different size (and size already being defined).

I can see some interesting/ devious applications as far as placement if it blocks Los/provides cover.
Having portable roadblocks/cover/LoS removers could be real fun in true dark elder fashion if they work this way.
How are they handled at the major events/tourneys? Any of these faqs address them?

Here's the discussion that Akroma was talking about I think, http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/382991.page
It's seven pages long so you're in for a read, but in the end it boiled down to the footprint is impassible terrain, however it is still a marker. By rules markers have no in game effect, so you gain no cover saves from it.

Yeah, I'm reading it now. Didn't mean to open that can of worms again, so I'll hold off on posting my thoughts...
Thanks for the link.

Yeah that's it. I couldn't find it, but it boidled down to the fact that it is a marker (no effect) and terrain (effects). At the 'ard boyz here my TO ruled that it did block LoS since it was terrain, the model/marker that GW released, and had the same radius as a blast marker. Hiding behind it only came up once when someone tried to shoot my haemy with a lascannon.

The Dark Eldar codex gives you the standard that the WWP is to be represented by the small blast marker or similiar.
The Limited edition marker is not similar to the blast marker, but it is just a marker and markers do not have any effect on the actual play of the game.

Agree with the above. The webway portal won't interfere with LOS, the same way that dice on the board or wound tokens or anything like that won't interfere with LOS.

Depending on th definition of "similar" you use
The WWP marker IS mathematically similar to the blast marker

An object is said to be mathematically similar to another if the only difference between them is a scaling in ALL directions The WWP is not mathematically similar, since it is a different shape, and the scaling is different. It does not fit the criteria of "the only difference between them is the scaling"

A column wouldn't be mathematically similar to a small blast marker either. A similar object would be one that using the same scaling factor in all directions. So, if the small blast marker is a 3" Diameter and is 0.125" thick (I guessed at the thickness), a similar object would be 12" Diameter and 0.5" thick, or 1.5" Diameter and 0.0625" thick, or something else where the diameter and the radius retain the same ratio.

No need to start this argument again, it was covered in full in the link provided. It is another one of those 'ask your TO' if you're concerned about it. Like I mentioned earlier, I use this as my webway portal:
and I definitely use it as cover for my models behind it, even at tournaments. So far, no complaints, but I could see how it would not be allowed as such. Anyone with vehicles is adding terrain to the game, so I personally don't think it should be that big of a deal.

Even then, I don't see that portal blocking that much LOS. I seriously doubt you're gonna be able to hide much behind it.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

An object using the same scaling factor in all directions as the Blast marker would still be a column (Just a very wide and short one like the Blast marker is).
