I quite like MMORPG's in concept but I'm cautious of one in the fallout world, how would having millions of players fit into the whole "there is barely anyone left" thing?
New Vegas (the game) pushed it a bit with number of NPC's but even then the total population of New Vegas (the city) was only around a hundred.

IDK, MMOs in general arent all that good. You're free to lynch me but I'm wasnt even really impressed with TOR. The amount of mmos these days that have to go F2P to compete with korea or at least entice people to play is astounding.

I love the large world, the quantity of content and the idea of player interaction in MMO's but I can't stand repetitive content without constant experimentation.
Hopefully GW2 will set a new standard for MMO's and will force the Fallout one (which has an infinitely better setting) to be even better.

Interplay lost the MMO rights? Damn
I never liked Bethesda’s interpretation of the Fallout world (felt more like a generic SciFi shooter).
Considering the amount of graphic bugs in the current Bethesda Fallout games, imagine how many bugs would be in an online multiplayer version?

OnTopic: I'm intrigued! As sceptical as I was of FO3 at first, I've grown to like it. Depending on how the players' roles are set up, the setting lends itself well to an MMO. I already enjoyed the postapocalyptic style in Fallen Earth, though the engine sadly didn't feel "comfortable" enough to me. The comparatively high number of players on a map may be a controversial topic, but I think it can be pulled off by carefully selecting the appropriate locations and creating a fitting background for the area, for as much as humanity's numbers were stinted, there still are things such as tribal villages and population centers amidst the ruins. Perhaps the player characters will be feral warriors from some clan, perhaps they will be survivors from some large city scrounging for resources. Or perhaps the MMO will have everyone be part of the population of a vault that is being evacuated in a hurry, ending up with everyone having to fend for themselves and thus getting lost in the larger world.
The only threat I see is that MMO's traditionally have a tendency to rape the setting in favour of the lowest common denominator, consistency be damned (see: elves in WoW, ships and uniforms in STO, faction designs in TOR, etc), and I don't really want to see the Fallout-setting being ripped apart like that. Buuut just like the aforementioned games, it could still be fun and worth playing ...

I always assumed, as with most RPGs, that the world was really bigger than what was portrayed.

Interesting point. Unfortunately, Bethesda already raped the setting somewhat when they converted the series into an FPS shooter (the original series was a tactical, isometric RPG). I could see a Bethesda Fallout MMO being even more mainstream (and buggy lol).
That being said, I could see a Bethesda MMO selling a lot of copies (although I wouldn’t be one of them).
