Subject: TWC @ 1500?

Abhorrent Grotesque Aberration

Hello, I've been toying with some wolf builds, And am having some trouble figuring out a good way to include twc.
At 1500 points I have a wolf lord on a thunderwolf, kitted out, then a 4 man twc unit kitted out for wound allocation.
However, i only have 3 gh squads. All with 1 melta, banner And a battle leader with a combi melta.
All in rhinos, but still it seems a bit light. Them 2 six man lf units.
Is this a decent point level for what I want? Or Are they to big of a sink to be anywhere close to compeditive?
Also, what's your opinion on a canis list with wolves and twc, I know it cant score but it just seems fun!

Ive been playing around with a basically the same list - its definitely light on troops, it all depends how the TWC roll on their saves imo if they roll well (esp the wolf lord) they can chew through squad after squad, if they get caught out in the open after winning a combat and the enemy unloads on them with a ton of sutff its all over. Personally id run small GH squads in TL PG/LC razorbacks for fire support and maybe one slightly larger sqaud in a rhino with a rune priest to backup the TWC. Then a couple of full Long Fang squads for firesupport, maybe something like.
The lone wolf you could ditch for something else i like him cause he is fun, can make people panic when he gets close to vehicles and hopefully the enemy shoot at him and he saves well!
How about
Fast Attack: Thunderwolf Cavalry (5#, 525 pts)
1 Wolf Lord in Power Armour, 230 pts = (base cost 100 + Storm Shield x1 30) + Runic Armour 20 + Wolftooth Necklace 10 + Thunderwolf Mount 45 + Frost Weapon x1 25
1 Thunderwolf Cavalry, 0 pts
1 Thunderwolf Cavalry, 55 pts = (base cost 50 + Melta Bombs 5)
1 Thunderwolf Cavalry, 50 pts
1 Thunderwolf Cavalry, 110 pts = (base cost 50 + Storm Shield 30 + Thunder Hammer 30)
1 Thunderwolf Cavalry, 80 pts = (base cost 50 + Storm Shield 30)
Troops: Grey Hunters Pack (11#, 310 pts)
1 Rune Priest in Power Armour, 110 pts = (base cost 100) + Chooser of the Slain 10
8 Grey Hunters Pack, 150 pts = 8 * 15 (base cost 15) + Mark of the Wulfen 30 + Wolf Standard 10 + Meltagun 5
1 Grey Hunter w/ Mark of the Wulfen, 15 pts
1 Rhino, 35 pts
Troops: Grey Hunters Pack (6#, 155 pts)
5 Grey Hunters Pack, 80 pts = 5 * 15 (base cost 15) + Meltagun 5
1 Razorback, 75 pts = (base cost 40) + Lascannon and TL Plasmagun 35
Troops: Grey Hunters Pack (6#, 155 pts)
5 Grey Hunters Pack, 80 pts = 5 * 15 (base cost 15) + Meltagun 5
1 Razorback, 75 pts = (base cost 40) + Lascannon and TL Plasmagun 35
Heavy Support: Long Fangs Pack (6#, 140 pts)
5 Long Fangs Pack, 125 pts = 5 * 15 (base cost 15) + Missile Launcher x5 50
1 Squad Leader, 15 pts
Heavy Support: Long Fangs Pack (5#, 130 pts)
4 Long Fangs Pack, 115 pts = 4 * 15 (base cost 15) + Lascannon x1 25 + Missile Launcher x3 30
1 Squad Leader, 15 pts

You are just putting too many points into your TWC. I run mine in one of two configurations:
TWC 120 pts
x2, 1 w/ Wolf Claw
Or
TWC 175 pts
x2, 1 w/ Wolf Claw 1w/ Meltabombs
Dropping Storm Shields and not taking a Thunder hammer I shave off 40-100 points depending on the combination you'll see argued.
I also shave a few points by taking a WGBL instead of a Wolf Lord. He's kitted out as follows:
WGBL 215 pts
x1 Thunderwolf Mount, Frost Axe, Storm Shield, Saga of the Warrior Born, Wolf Tooth Necklace
So I'm shaving off 70-130 points compared to how you commonly see these guys listed. What's the trade off?
For shooting attacks, I have to screen them with another unit. This is not big deal. They are cavalry, a forward reserve. They don't lead the advance. That's what the main line infantry (Grey Hunters) are for. With a 18+D6" threat range, they can get around their screen if needed. That gives me a 4+ save from shooting. But what about assault?
Well I have to be careful not to engage I5 units. The WGBL gets 5 attacks on the charge. More if they managed to kill something the previous turn. This can take care of enough I4 units to make it so the 2-3 Cavalry members are relatively save behind their T5 and 3+ save.
Also, you may notice I opted out of Thunderhammers/Power Fists. Why? The initiative is more important. My WGBL is S6. He can wreck most vehicles in close combat. The only one he can't is a Land raider and WHY would I charge a Land Raider? If its got some nasties inside, I want my Cavalry ready to counter-charge it, not just get charged itself! The other Cavalry members are S5 with Rending generally. They too can wreck AV10-12 in close combat, and it will usually be AV10. Against T6 creatures I'm giving enough attacks at high enough strength not to worry as well, and those are better dealt with at range anyways.
So in short, don't spend so many point on Cavalry. I take this combination in 1500-2000 points. I only take 3 Cavalry + WGBL in games larger than 1850. My regular opponents are Tyranids, Eldar, and Blood Angels with the occasional Tau, IG, and Black Templars. If you use them right, you'll have no trouble keeping them alive to get into combat and they will decimate whatever they touch.
