So I made the decision to part with the army that got me into 40k, the Space Wolves. I bought all of the stuff around the time of its release and it has sat in various stages of assembly since. Has anybody else ever gotten excited about an army but lost all motivation before it was finished?

I bought the codex, 2 battleforces, 2 wolf packs, 2 boxes of terminators, a devastator squad, 4 metal hq characters, a razorback and a dreadnought. Only a little over half ever got assembled.

I guess i just got distracted by other stuff, namely starting fantasy but also Necrons and Orks.

Figured I'd throw up a poll to see who else this has happened to.

Stay tuned for the post when I come back and whine about how much money I lost by putting everything up on Ebay.... T-minus 6days 22hours and counting.

Its being like that for lots of projects.

I assemble them lovingly, getting rid of all mold lines.
Give them nice scenic bases, most scratch built
Spent lots of time with conversions
Even got some painted.

Then i dont touch them anymore T-T

LunaHound, thanks for posting. It's nice to hear I'm not the only one, especially with the mold lines. I spent WAY too much time on my Wolves.

My method is to build and paint whatever I buy before buying more. It's very hard to do though! I was at the games store today and had to try very, very hard to not buy 2 or 3 more boxes, because I already have 8 models to paint yet.

My method is to take the money that i would have spent (or a portion of it) and put it aside for the next purchase. Then it's a pleasant surprise when I am ready to buy, as there's some cash ready to go!

Good luck with your new armies!

I have being pondering over the cause of it over and over and over , because I think its a horrible habit to support that might
have greater consequences if it turns into more than warhammer related.

So far, it seems to follow a pattern...

I like an army to how they look, and how they look together. I have enough interest to be dedicated to that group.
Then here is where it goes wrong.

I then try to look at them from an army list POV, e.g add this and that for the sake of game.

Then they dont look anything to close to what I originally see in them, and i lose interest.

I'm going to hold off starting the Orks for as long as possible. I have a ridiculous amount of necrons to assemble + my chaos fantasy army to finish.

The selling of the Space Wolves probably won't fund any new Warhammer purchases, though maybe it will help me finish paying for my Dreadfleet commission project.

Exactly! I loved the look of the Space Wolves, until I tried making a competitive list with them. It also pissed me off that a few of the unit choices I wanted didn't have GW models to go with them.

I just gave away a Dark Elf army. I forgot I bought it... forgot I painted the whole thing in 2 weeks... forgot I converted a Chimera and a chariot.

Sat in the closet for about 2 years. Upon digging it out I found something else! Space Hulk! Forgot about that!

My Ork army is the 3rd one I've owned. The exact same models.... 3 times. Madness.

Waves upon waves of marines have passed through my hands. I have a whole box of scrap that once upon a time was several landraiders and rhinos.

I spent about $200 to get into Warhammer Fantasy, painted up about 40 models to a tabletop standard, then sold it all and got out. I made back my money but it was a pain in the ass.

I bought a Space Marine army after my awesome Imperial Guard needed retiring and then I left the hobby for about a year the day I was going to start playing with them...

When I got back in to the hobby I built my Necron army and played it a lot, then went to return to the marines and then, boom, new codex, and it destroyed the theme of my army, never ever bothered.

1500pt Grey Knights [unpainted] 4-0-0
1500pt Eldar [unpainted] 3-1-0 [retired]
1500pt Necron [painted] 33-0-0 [retired]

Mmm, well, no. All the armies I own, I've fielded at one time or another.

Some of them don't get fielded often. For example, my Nids have seen 1 or 2 games - and I fudged the rules with my opponent's consent, seeing as I had no Synapse models, apart from a Starcraft-universe Kerrigan I made from an Inquisitor Death-Cult Assassins, modified Bal'rog wings, and some greenstuff, which I intend to field as a Hive Tyrant. ^_^

My Tau haven't been out of their box apart from when I was looking for stuff that got mixed in with them, probably in over a year...

My Chaos haven't been fielded in months, but sometimes I use them as proxies - like when I was deciding whether or not to get Sternguard, I fielded Chaos Marines with boltguns and called them Sternguard. Or in another game that never happened, cause I changed the list before playing, the ones with BPs and Chainswords stood in as Assault Marines without jump packs.

My nids are being badly treated, all piled up in a tank box. Maybe when I get my 3 incoming KR cardboard cases, I'll give two to my Marines - they really need more space, since they've filled an entire GW case and then some - and then give the Nids something nice, like their own KR case, instead of some hand-me-down GW case formerly occupied by other armies. I think that'd feel good for them, and help make them happy. They must be so hungry, they haven't eaten anything in months, if not over a year. Poor things... :: huggles a cuddlefex ::

But no, I don't sell off my armies, even when they haven't been played in a long time. Cause one day, I'll go, "Hey, wouldn't it be fun to try this army again?" and then, they'll be waiting and ready. ^_^

I used to have that problem. Then I just got tired of it then started using the army painter dipping method. No more unpainted army! Even if it doesn't look as good as my first few batches of models where I painted in the conventional manner.

I have not been playing long, I know I say that a lot. I tell that I will never sell my orks or any other army i might start. Because when I do officially sell it, I know there will be moments where I want to play them again. I don't understand why I would sell them off after all the time and money I put into it either.

I love modeling armies for 40k. I just enjoy it a lot, but my play time is limited, so while I will buy and build a new army I couldn't always play it. Then I'd get the idea to start another modeling project, but would need money to pay for it so one of the other built, but unplayed armies gets posted to ebay to raise cash.

My current armies are in my signature, but I am also building a Dark Eldar army as well right now.

Beyond those I have built and eventually sold off the following 40k armies:
2x Tzeentch Chaos marines
Slaanesh Chaos Marines
Nurgle Chaos Marines
2x Space Marines
3x Imperial guard (Cadians, vostroyans, and alternative figures for troops)
Tyranids
Necrons
Ork Speed Freaks
Daemonhunters and Witchhunters
Sisters of Battle
Grey Knights
Eldar
Original Dark Eldar

Mind you when I would build new armies I would buy and build something in the neighborhood of 3000 points for each army with lots of different force options and not just do a small 1500 point army and call it a day.

This is how I perpetuated my hobby through being married and through a lengthy illness as well. Wasn't well enough to play, but could sit up and build models from time to time. Was on disability so couldn't afford to buy new stuff until I sold something else off. Some of these armies turned into Flames of War british forces as well. This past year I actually plunked down the cash for my chaos renegades army using forge world conversion parts. First time I used money completely unrelated to the sale of minis to buy minis in about 10 years. Masochist that I am I also did the same thing on the Warhammer side for a while with multiple armies too until I got tired of moving around large blocks of troops and sold them all off for more 40k stuff.

Once I get caught up on lawyers fees from my divorce I intend to plunk down the cash to buy the rest of the Dark Eldar that I want to pickup. Need to check with my usual discount sellers and see if they have full stocking for finecast finally so that I can shave a few hundred dollars off the final total. Plus side with my wife leaving: more time to actually play mini games now. Negative side: no sex...gotta take the good with the bad.
