Just started a space wolves army and i have 40 grey hunters. I kitted out 2 of the squads with plasma for 2 more defensive units and 2 squads with meltas and put them into drop pods to fly in and pop enemy armour. Are these good ideas? Or shall i pack them all out with meltas?

My advice would be to group 9 hunters and a WG with fist and combi-melta in a drop pod, and at least one of the other squads or a fang pack with a WG in TDA with cyclone ml.

Get four Rhinos and use a Rhino rush strategy.

In of themselves, these aren't bad ideas.

For Grey Hunters in a transport most people take 8 man squads with Meltaguns then attack a Wolf Guard packleader with Combi-Melta and an HQ. Generally its a Rune Priest and the transport is a Rhino. Its a strong unit combination. For drop pods you need to take 3+ to get the most out of them in my opinion. They don't all need to be Grey Hunters (one Dreadnought with a Multi-Melta supported by Wolf Guard or Grey Hunters would not be terrible for a Turn 1 drop) but you want to make sure you aren't just throwing a unit away.

Personally i run 40 Grey Hunters with x2 Plasmaguns on foot. I've had to change my tactics and overall strategy from what most people play to make it work. In a mech/pod/hybrid list there is always a place for Plasma weapons. The low AP really helps against FNP. Just remember though, they are Rapid Fire. Rapid Fire weapons aren't really threatening outside of 18" if you are on foot. In a Drop Pod, this is easy to meet. Otherwise you have to be really aggressive or put them in a Rhino to bump it up to 26" (12" movement, 2" disembark, 12" rapid fire range).

In a mech/hybrid list, your 'defensive' units tend to be 5 man squads in a Razorback. Basically you sit the Razorback on the home objective with the Grey Hunters inside. It plus the Long Fangs and their Razorbacks provide suppressing fire for the rest of your army.

If you want to keep the Drop Pods, I'd get a third one and a Dreadnought. I'd also consider getting two Rhinos for the Grey Hunters you have.

Thanks for all the good advice guys, i'll take it on board and see what results i get. Lots of rhinos definately sounds good, what long fang setup would people advise on?

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

I recommend trying 10 GH with 2x specials (I generally go plasma or melta), a standard and a MoTW. I usually leave off the wolf guard on plasma squads, as to 1) get the free 2nd plasmagun and because they tend to sit back and pelt more shots in than meltaguns, so only firing the combiplasma once is frustrating- you wait for the right time to rapid fire, and you get assaulted, or you fire it range and your combi is only good for one shot (of course this is when you will roll a 1 or a 2 ) If they do get into CC the unit charging them is bound to have gotten shot up a bit, and between counter-attack, the standard, the MotW guy and the melta squad or two that always hangs around the plasma squad, they should be right in C- at least against most things. They aren't going to stand up to CC monsters (a block of bloodletters/genestealers, nobz, trygons etc), but unless the unit is a dedicated CC unit the GH don't mind getting into a punch up with them. I like to put combimelta/fist wolfguard with my melta squads, so if they fail the double melta they can charge and try and fist the vehicle. Often If a dread pods into my lines I'll try and melta it with the grey hunters, but if I say destroy a weapon or stun the dread its going to rampage into my vindicators/longfangs/etc. So that fist on the meltagun squads see's alot of action against vehicles.

Although I do have to say it's pretty hard to not do well with GH. Either 10 men in a rhino with your choice of equipment, or 5 men in a razorback with your choice of probably less equipment since you want razor squads cheap the last thing I want to add is think carefully about the option to buy a fist/p.weap/plasma pistol for your GH squad. It is tempting to buy a squad sometimes with a wolf guard, a fist, power weap, plasma pistol, 2x special weapons, standard and motw, and it does make for a hilariously tooled up troop choice, but it really isn't worth the cost. You can spend alot of points to make sure your one squad is tooled up for every situation, but as a general rule GH are already tooled up to handle almost every situation. Dreads/walkers, TEQ'S, monstrous creatures and land raider-esque heavy armor are pretty much the only thing they have problems with- until you give them melta/plasma guns, and fist toting wolf guard to lead them
