In the continuing effort to expand my Flames of War Platoon options for the Germans, I put together a Recce Platoon that can be used for both Mid and Late War. I went with the Sd Kfz 222 and Sd Kfz 223 (Radio).

Nice minis. My one suggestion is using some black ink wash over the mesh turret covers to make them look more realistic.
I love the look of the German ACs but always thought anything other than 8-rads are much too fragile. How well do they do in-game?

Thanks!
Not sure how they work -- I find out tomorrow when I play in the Flames of Ron tournament. =)

Very nice models., I bought some 222's on Friday from Forged in Battle, for Raiding missions in Burning Empires, the hard packed sand means lots of swift movement!
No command radio car, so I'm trying to make the antenna from Paperclips, wished I bought the ones you've got!

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

If you're open to a suggestion, try using 20gauge copper jewelry wire and bending it with needle-nosed pliers to get good, clean angles. I use this trick a lot with my Heavy Gear 'mechs. For example, the crash bars to this Cobra Gear:

Very nice, consider your suggestion adopted!
I'm using these as an Africa Korps Raiding force, as my club is playing Raiding Aces/ Burning Empires. Hence the colour scheme.
Got another 222 to convert as the Command Radio element, managed to get some 3mm Brass rod today, so will experiment with it and possibly with my soldering iron to make the antenna.

They look awesome! Would you recommend FiB minis over their BF counterparts? And how do armoured recce platoons work out in the game?

Hmmm....
On your 1st Question, in some cases yes and others no. My reasoning is thus, The FiB vehicles all have built in bases (I'm not overly sold on this) but I buy the odd platoon because they are cheap and have a specific role. e.g We are playing raiding Aces, I wanted a small fast Armoured unit with reasonable firepower to counter all the LRDG groups I was facing. So I opted for the 222's. The FiB infantry is by far superior to BF stuff, the quality of their Support platoons (HMG's and Mortars) are superb, I would buy their Gun teams over BF.
The Armoured Recce Platoons are well, highly dependant on the situation. In LW Puma's can be great (good gun and a Co-Ax MG for anti-infantry) it makes a fairly flexible platform, it can kill light armour, artillery, and infantry. 222's are more subtle and actually a little difficult to use effectively, the CMD one has only an MG, the 2cm KWK is pretty good at killing Infantry and transports etc, the 2.8cm is AT 7 but no HE and no MG. The 2cm with MG is best. By far the best thing on 222 is that is Wheeled, so it ran rocket across the desert (as it's hard packed sand e.g Road) which is useful as a Raider or Garrison force!
Recce Platoons benefit from being able to disengage (pg 128) meaning if you stumble across an AT position in ambush or something coming for you, you make high tail it out of there in the Enemy shooting phase (yes move when it's not even your turn!). That is sometimes a great boon and frustrates your enemy no end.

Thanks mwnciboo, exactly the information i was after. I'm not a fan of the moulded-on bases either, but the £3.50 halftracks are appealing... 222's with access to the 2cm gun look like they could be useful, i'll have to pick some up and try them out. Really like your Lehr regmient too!

I like the way the look, however a tip.
When taking pictures try natural lighting with no flash or near florescent. The paint looks glossy, but I found it was just the lighting.
However they look very nice, I would like to see a couple more platoons together like that.

Thanks, I take your criticism on board, I do want to take better pictures. If you like i'll take you through my photographic technique. I usually use, my Daylight bulb lamp as a light source, and then my white background is an A3 piece of card. I then setup my camera on MACRO mode, long exposure, on a tripod, and then a 2 second delay so I can remove my hand without bluring the image. The one above, I couldn't find my piece of Card. I must have had the flash on, i don't always notice because the Daylight bulb is as bright as a Nuclear weapon flash! I also have several units I need to re-Dullcote. I tend to do 3-4 very light coats of it to get a more realistic approach. Any advice how I can tweak this to make for better pics?
