Ladies and Gents,

A few weeks/months ago I started a thread about starting a 2nd army. I was thinking a transition from my Orks to Tau. However, the unthinkable has happened. My Dad is finally willing to start playing Warhammer with me. This is monumental to me. I am 27 and have been playing GW games since I was 13. I played fantasty, mordheim, bloodbowl, and battle fleet gothic and never once did he desire to play. I even worked extra jobs during school to afford a second fantasy army and a second battle fleet gothic fleet, but he never was interested. He was a pilot in the air force and all he cared about was dragging me to play golf when he wasn't flying or ass pounding Sadam from 30,000+ feet in the air. So, my point is....this is huge. After the death of his father/ my grandfather he is much more interested in finding other things that we can do together besides golf. Add in 28 years of seat time in some jets and his back isn't so good anymore and his hearing is worse.

So, I'm canning the idea of a new army for me and will just continue to slowly expand the Orks. My main focus now is helping my Dad find an army. He is very tactical and can take me down in a game of chess faster you would believe. I showed him the pictures from my BGB and he seemed to latch onto the more human armies. So, if given the choice between marines or guard which do you think a former Colonel in the Air Force might enjoy more?

Thanks,
Makers

Probably Guard if its the human side he's looking at, plus they have Valkyries!

For the more tactical side I would have said that the Eldar might be up his street, as all the units have to work together and be in the right place to win, which might appeal to him. But if he wants a human that probably rules them out!

Btw chess is definetly not 40k, so tactical comparions with his ability may be false there.

If you're playing for fun (does he intend to play at tournaments), and he has any sense of modelling, I'd buy the IA8 book, and see if he likes the air cav list there. He'd have to buy more forgeworld models, but it's all drop-troops and airplanes.

Being a former pilot perhaps he would like to have air support so maybe show him grey knights, blood angels and guard. Being as it is a first army guard is a lot of painting but maybe that's what he wants.

Imperial Guard sounds like a good idea.
It's also a good match for Orks...

I would also say to show him the Detachment 99 and its updated list.

No, he probably won't be playing tournaments. This is something he will probably play with me and possibly my neighbor and his son. I go to my local shop on Thursdays and play, but I doubt he will do that.

I agree that 40K is not chess, but my point was more that he is capable of developing solid strategies and performing critical thinking. Chess is a little more cut and dry when it comes to combat whereas with 40K the most awesome plan ever can be foiled by a bag of dice.

I was only implying that if he has never played 40k before but figures hes a good chess player he might get a nasty surprise and end up hating the game after the first few games if he loses a few, tis all.
Or get disheartened and quit playing.

Have him read some of the fluff and have him make his own decision.

He may thirst for CC after killing things from 30k feet.

he may like artillery or flying in the game.

Usually Marines (Any Variety) are the way to go for new players, they are very forgiving of learning mistakes. Also you can get the core of a marine force fairly cheap second hand.

Thanks everyone. I'll pick up the Vanilla Marine Codex tonight as my local shop doesn't have the Guard one and I'll just let him do some reading on it.
