I was reading the big 6th edition "leak" thread earlier and a post caught my interest that basically said all the uniquity of playing 40k and the big game-breaking decisions you make are often in the list you field, after that point you pretty much just move models up and win if you can counter their list better.

I realized the two armies i play, CSM and SW pretty much fit that description, and it bothered me.

For example, many of you have played Diablo 2 before im sure. Hammerdins and Blizz sorc's were obviously the best, but i never had so much fun with D2 as when i played a Cleric, its a holy
bolt build designed to kill undead (clear the Chaos Sanctuary basically) and heal allies.

It was fun because it wasnt played but also ecause the Paladin allowed it to be made.

So, what army do you think has the most variations in their play style?

Right off the bat i gotta think its IG because of the sheer number of models and weapons, what are your thoughts?

Do you play a gimmicky army designed to do 1 cool thing and is less competitive but makes up for it in fun? if so what is it?

Vanilla marines have a good range of builds. Bikes, drop pods, gunline, assault, and variations thereof.

Guard does mech, hybrid and foot well. You can also build a drop troop list, though its not that great out of the standard codex.

Ah yes, Marines in rhinos, Marines who are good at close combat in rhinos, Marines who have invulnerable saves in rhinos? The possibilities are endless! Granted they are distinct units, but the armies tend to be similar much of the time.

I would have to say Guard. You can do a completely mechanized company, replete with tons of heavy tanks and platoons in chimeras, an airborne army built around valkyries and vendettas, a footslogging gunline, power blobs, mechvets, or any mix thereof. The Space Marine codex has a lot of variation as well, with armies built around different kinds of elites and special characters, a dreadbash list built around 6 dreadnoughts, biker armies, Marines in rhinos, or an all drop army.

I agree with the standard marines from blacksails. Also got to say tau when the new edition comes out. Seems like the different auxiliary units will allow for a lot of variations along with the many customizations of the battlesuits.

Any new codex really. As a special charater in any codex will allow you to spam a certain unit. so any new codex with lots of special characters. Or just lots of spamable units.

I would say Dark Eldar or CSM. Options for assault oriented or shooting oriented or tough and hard to kill, only things they don't really do well are hoard (and DE can kind of do that).

I love IG, but space wolves take the cake.

All of their units are insanely customizable, and the sagas make it even more insane for HQ units.

Not to mention they are a space marine army with calvary AND beasts.

I'm not panicking, not yet

We have a ways to go before 6th ed, and we'll adapt when it breaks, like always, except for a few ragequitters ot those who are hearing the siren call of other games already, and take the opportunity to shift over.

I have to admit to hearing the call of Warmachine (just starting out on that), but i'll not be bailing on 40K just yet.
