I'm wondering if people who play Flames of War often write historical fictions to go along with their armies, since I'm thinking about setting up a wiki where FoW players can write such stories and have them all interact together as part of a whole community.
Obviously, I'd like to know if this is something that FoW players do before I set it up.

I honestly don't, but then again I feel that you don't have too. Because there is no "fluff", it was real men fighting real battles. Hell I know people who have family members that were in the 101st, and bought/use that list because of it. I'd recommend reading nonfiction accounts of the units that actually fought. Some of it is pretty screwed up. For example read any book about Stalingrad aka the meat grinder.

People in my family fought in the war too, including the air war against Germany.
I recognize that this was real, as opposed to other games, but I figured some people might make up their own unit and write a battle history for it. Automatically Appended Next Post: I haven't started this game yet, so I don't know how people play it, whether they play actual units and forces, or they make their own but still stay fairly historically accurate with what they do.

Ok. That's the sort of thing I was wondering about.
Do players ever write their own rules for units much, like for vehicles that were used in World War II but aren't included in the game?

heh... my grandfathers fought each other...
Royal Dragoons of British Colombia vs 9. SS-Panzerdivision ‘Hohenstaufen’ ... Oh the arguments that would happen during family get togethers. (I was 12 at the time so I did not understand most of what was being said) I wont make armies out of these two because of the attachment I have with my now deceased grandfathers.
But on to the OT. I think making a back story to any army is fun and a neat Idea, it adds a bit of bonus depth into your army your playing, But for FoW, not so much, the history and back story is already their ;D

Yeah, I think FoW is one of the games where creating your own force isn't really possible, since it's so recent, and sometimes personal. Now, I'd like to introduce you to the wonderful world of 19th and 18th century wargaming. For example, my British and French generals for Napoleonic Black Powder - Sir William Bookim, Duke of Brambigburmshire, and Pierre de Fromagepunt. Or my 18th century 'Imagi-nations' faction, the Duchy of Bißwitz.

Flames of War actually does a lot of that with their free briefings. http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=108 Automatically Appended Next Post: ParatrooperSimon wrote:Makarov wrote:I honestly don't, but then again I feel that you don't have too. Well, now you got me thinking.. I have been wanting some SS Paratroopers.I know they had a regiment but i cannot find much info. You know Assult rifles and the RPGs Grandpa. But for us we use any list from any period in our battles.example we just had a skirmish battle with the 101st. vs. Early war Italians. It was a fun match.

I don't think the SS had paratroopers, did they? I though the Falschirmjäger were part of the military.

I deliberately went for Lehr 902 regiment as I had both a book on their battles and also I had visited the battlefields they fought over in Normandy on a Staff College battlefield tour.
I also am collecting a D-Day British Airbourne (read glider bourne) Force because my Great uncle served in the British Airbourne and was captured south of the Merville Battery on D-Day itself. He died in 1999, but had an amazing life.
So I wouldn't say I write a Historical Backstory so much as tie in to existing history or design a force to reflect the actual forces involved.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

In a way, that's like picking a backstory, although something like that would be best suited to the article creation system here for army profiles.

I personally do not have a problem with it, infact now that you bring it up I would like to write a story for my early war germans.
Some people might get tiffed about it, adn it not being historically accurate, but I look at it like this...most of your battles you play are made up, and the terrain won't be perfect, or it just might be for fun, why not take it that extra step forward?
