Subject: Prospective Mini War gamer looking for advice
I'm making this post because I would like to enter the hobby of mini war gaming but I'm having a hard time deciding between 40K and WM and would like some constructive third party input.
I believe I would like both styles of game-play based off battle reports I have seen and if possible will try a demo in-store. I believe I slightly favor WM on the overall "Game" front due to the inherent importance of individual unit dynamics and the generally well received rule books/balancing. However I give kudos to 40K for the richer story, more varied game play, scale of battles, and diversity of units.
40K is the more popular of the two games in my local game shop, so that is a big plus for me as this is a solo venture on my part and I have no friends/family with an interest to play.
So with that in mind, I planned on buying the game rule book, one of the Battleforce/BattleBoxes and the respective army rule book, and just paint/learn the game on my own until I feel comfortable playing other people.
I'm not sure if there are any other things I should consider, if so please let me know, any responses are greatly appreciated, cheers!

Well, I think the best thing about 40k is the background, the universe, the coolness of it all. Don't get me wrong, I love playing the game, but I love playing it because of how original and interesting the whole grim dark of the year 40,000 is. Warmachine is cool too, but it's just not as special. If you really get into this you may find yourself reading the books and playing the video games too. I would definitely say to go with 40k. You won't regret it. The new mega battleforces are a great deal. It's kinda a pain, but if you wanna save a lot of money and are interested in Orks or Space Marines buying stuff from the black reach set on Ebay is a great deal. I guess the first thing you need to decide is what army you want to play. Go ahead and PM me if you have any questions.

Welcome to Dakka I personally would say 40k but that's because I'm bias and have always collect/played from GW range,

First, let me thank all of you for the warm welcome, and specifically to Iandroid for his detailed post.
I think the overall proliferation of the game, brand loyalty, and good spirited nature of most 40K players I've seen has led me to feel it's the better choice of the two. However WM is not off the board for me just yet, so any staunch supporters feel free to coerce!

Many feel WM is a great game. It is comparatively cheap and fairly fun.
40k is more widespread and a touch more diverse. Though it is a touch more expensive and some would say GW are at times insensitive to their fanbase.
I would go 40k to start with. You can always play WM later.
Now then! Back to the general introductionisms.
The Big Book of Purplefood states that to introduce you properly i have to do 2 things.
The first is to say Welcome.
Welcome to Dakka! Have a good time.
The second is to show you a shiny youtube video in order to spread my subversive way of life...
I give you...
... The James Bond song!
