So i'm thinking of making some units of paladins in small units.
it says for every 5 i can have 2 psycannons.
Am I allowed to field a single paladin with psycannon? Or for psycannons to become an option I need to hit 5 in the unit first?

While you should have 5 Paladins before you may select psycannons as upgrades, in a friendly game I would be perfectly happy to let you take 2/5ths of a psycannon on a lone Paladin, for 2/5ths of it's normal cost, able to fire as an Assault 1 and 3/5 weapon. Obviously, it's hard to roll 3/5ths of a die, but I'm sure if you were to use a model or coping saw of some sort you could remove 2/5ths of the die's facings, allowing you to achieve the correct effect.
