vis-a-vis ogre kingdoms in fantasy, is it possible that GW would release a new army for 40k? what would it most likely be?

GW doesn't make "new armies".

Not since Tau anyway.

If GW made any new armies anytime soon it will be MEQ.

Aside from the issue of keeping up with their already slow release schedule for codex's (cue complaints about too many marine codex's etc). There is the issue of finding a niche in 40k that isnt already filled by an existing race in some way shape or form.

The tau offer the best opportunities to introduce new races as part of an existing codex (alien mercs) and rumour has it they'll be adding a couple more with their next codex bringing them up to: Tau, Kroot, Vespid, Demiurg and I believe 1 more.

However I find it incredibly unlikely that they'd make a whole new race and codex without having an existing one eaten to clear up a niche.

Good thing you didn't say Squats, or someone would have to reset the clock...

Yeah, generally new races are gonna get added in with the Tau as they expand. That is what they were designed for, a sort of alien confederation.

Ogre Kingdoms were a new army? I recall them being out for quite some time before this years updated Codex....

Anyway GW has hit their limit of non-Space Marine armies. They added the Necrons/Tau in 2000-2001 and that was it. We'd probably get some more playable factions if they didn't insist on releasing so many MEQ Codices (GK, BT, SW, BA, DA, the list will grow and grow...).
