Subject: Skaven or Ogres?

Hey, I'm looking to get into Fantasy and am up to the stage of choosing an army. I can't decide between the two 9Skaven and Ogres), so if you could help me with choosing I would be grateful The only thing is, my family are still annoyed with me for locking myself in my room and building, reading and painting Warhammer. So I would rather if HEAPS of money doesn't go into this army. Pretty much, in short, I'm looking for an army that I can easily do in my spare time from 40k. So I can have horde armies (Skaven) or massively powerful small armies (Ogres) and still get it done. Thanks! Looking forward to your opinion.

If your family is mad at you, Ogres are the way to go. No one could be mad at Ogres. But if you come out and they demand to know what you're wasting your time on and you hold up a rat, you're not going to make any friends.

Ogres are cheaper to get to full strength. They also have the newest army book so updates won't be a worry for you.
They also won't take as long to paint.
I would reccomend purchasing 2 Battalions, 2 boxes of Mournfangs, 2 Ironblasters, 2 packs of Sabretusks, and Butcher/SM. The ogre battalion is the best one for value that GW sells.
This would give you 12 Bulls with ironfists, 12 Ironguts, a unit of 4 Mournfangs(with Ironfists, HA, and Dragonhide Banner), 2 Ironblasters, 4 Sabretusks, 4 leadbeltchers, a Slaughter Master, and 4 spare bodies.
Then with the 4 spare bodies you can scratch build a Bruiser BSB, 2 additional Butchers, and the 4th can be a floating body you can assemble as you desire. 3rd butcher, Tyrant, additional Bruiser, additional Slaughter master...
This will give you around 2500 points with no upgrades and cost around $460 USD(with army book) from GW. Online retailers can save you significant amounts of money.
With upgrades this is an easy 3k army with plenty of wiggle room for options.

Thats what I was thinking, but without all of the model advice. I wont be buying from GW, because in Australia they are WAY overpriced, so probably in the swap shop or some online dealer.

You can't get a more different set of armies than Skaven and Ogres.
If your family is mad at you, Ogres are the way to go. No one could be mad at Ogres. But if you come out and they demand to know what you're wasting your time on and you hold up a rat, you're not going to make any friends.

I would definitely recommend Ogres over skaven if time and money (and also space in my case) are an issue. In a recent game against someone from my club my 1500pt ogre army had 16 models in it of which 13 were from one battalion box compared to the 80+ models that he had on his side including a full battalion box and a bunch of extra bits and bobs like weapon teams.

One way to look at it, I play skaven my 2000pt army has 229 troops.
For a competitive list you try to stick to a ratio of 1 model per 10pts
With only 20 clanrats in a box you would need about 10 boxes just to have the ration included.
Granted my army has 229, 1 monster, 2 artillary and 4 weapons teams.
The upside to skaven is the newest group set is the isle of blood atm meaning you can often get cheap skaven off ebay (this is what I did for my 120 slaves were buying isle of blood skaven sets for 20pounds each, 4pound more then a box of clanrats in return I get double the models + weapons teams + engineer etc.
ofc a 2000pt ogre army would barely have 30-40 models tops.

These ogres seem like beasts in combat if you can have 30-40 models and be 3k points xD I think I will go Ogres, less models, easier to get the workload done, more points in less time Thanks guys!
